Since you are just arriving in Canada, try t get a safety box whereever it is available. Once you settle down i.e. buy your house, try to get a safety box with a bank that is closer to your home. We did the same. First few yeras we had our safety box with a bank in downtown. Once we settled, we changed the box to another bank very close to our house.

Try to find a new branch opening up in your area. If you're in the rural areas they put up banks in almost every new plaza. They will surely have a box available. I'm looking for one currently as well and having no luck in my area which is quite populated and the branches have been around for years.

I like lana2005's approach to find a solution to very common problem.

Here is another to consider. Before you open an account with any bank, call them up (or visit the nearest branch) and tell them that you are a new immigrant with substantial amount to deposit, and that you would consider them for business only if they have a locker available. It is my understanding that most bank manager's have a 2-3 lockers of every size reserved for new important clients.

ICICI Bank Canada has safe deposit boxes (atleast in the Brampton branch). Try them out.
