Bring or arrange for plenty of money(back up just in case...).

Think twice before signing any contract be it for cellphone or apartment.
Basements are not that convenient but are available without contract or a clause in contract that enables you to leave before the tenure of contract e.g. 2 months' notice.

DO NOT COME TO CANADA FOR MONEY!!!

Do not expect to start life from the point you left in India. Here you START FROM SCRATCH!!!

Be prepared to do everything yourself. You have no servants here!

Learn cooking.

Open NRI account in India before coming to Canada though it is not much of a problem.

Be prepared for shocks like Rs 80 bus tickets one way.

Bring essential medications.

Why would you even think of it as a Rs 80 bus ticket, when you are not in India anymore? It's a $2.25 ticket, which is one of the best things about this place - you can go all the way from Pearson airport on the west end of Toronto till Port Union on the east end of Toronto, transferring from a bus to the subway to the RT to another bus, ALL on a SINGLE ticket.

May be I am wrong but I think almost every Indian who arrives in Canada coverts dollars in rupees before spending, I am talking of initial days in Canada.

When he(or she) starts earning, then he gets into the mould of understanding how cheap or expensive it is. So for initial days, it remains Rs 80 bus ride and not for $2.25 especially when one is not earning and he is spending during initial days of settling down.
