I am quoting here the approximate costs as noted from kijiji, and craigslist.
All of the prices are for the used items and for start up. Discard these after use or resell if you find them re-usable.

Hook Up Costs (Rent Deposit, Telephone, Utilities etc)
Rent $1000/m 2BR in the bordering areas. (Suburbs) T-V-E.
Utilities as quoted by the ADs. In apartments mostly all inclusive. One parking spot./ rental. Some buildings charge for parking.
First and Last months' rent at the time of entry. Months notice required for vacating. Some 'Supers' demand damage deposits too.
In some areas only one month, current month only. If you take an annual lease, in some buildings one month rent free.
Phone $30. With LD $45+/- Deposts: currently none due to competetion.

How much does a baby/Day care cost per annum
On an average $40/DAY. 5x40 per week. with receipts. Baby sitting services $5 /hr It all depends with the services provided. It could be higher. Contact community services for locations.

How long it will take to get certification to work as an engineer.

It all depends on the time of arrival and the start of the courses.
Also depends on how well you are prepared for this onslaught.
Bring details of all of the subjects taken, Curriculum as described in the year book or the prospectus. Marks and Rank obtained. Also obtain the direct link to the registrar's office for these educational institutions to contact DIRECTLY and verify your bonafides. MUST.
It will take three years for Dummies. Slow but sure.
Two for smart ones.
One year (plus) for those who are Extremely smart and have done all of the above spade work prior to landing and have an entry into an university arranged before arrival and with the right timing.

You are a smart man/woman and I am sure you know all of these already.

Thats a very good post . I feel its ideal not to invest heavily initially as around the year there are 'big deals' on all items . Recycle your old ones for new good ones at good prices.

That's a wonderful list by ftfl and I am really tempted to add on to it. That's what it costs for list of things you requested in Canada.

If you are in the planning stages of coming to Canada pl decide on the place where you would like to land. There are enough links in Charcha comparing life styles in different provinces. Compare the inputs against your field of specialization and opportunities.

Do not worry about furnishings, day care etc at this stage. There are plenty of posts in classified here itself for day cares, partially furnished or fully furnished basement apartments or other appartments. Your rent will take care and cover most of the immediate needs.

The settlement funds you come with are good to take care of your initial expenses and get going.
