9000/12= 750 per month

Rent 2-room apartment for $1000 and share it with 4 persons total= 250 per month rent. So you have $500 for food and bus fare.

Obviously in this budget other things would be "luxury." It is not impossible to live on this budget. I think this figure is taken from some prospectus or other bookish material from some immigration agent.

Everybody knows about the joke that Canada is the best place to live in the World :D

One more thing, on this forum most of members are from Toronto and GTA, so we take Toronto as Canada. Cost of living is less in other provinces of Canada.

I was really surprised to see the monthly cost of living of Canada is 750 $.

what I know is Vancouver is costliest place in Canada and Toronto is much cheaper than Vancouver.

So don't know how to react for \"toronto = Canada\"

Cheers
Raj

Sure, that is a factor of the currency strength.
The Euro is much stronger than the CAD.
You can take all your Euros to India and then say that India is dirt cheap !

I think the cost of living is largely a factor of the lifestyle one wants to lead.
Cultural factors also come into play which make certain things cheaper in a part of the world and more expensive in others.
For instance, owning and maintaining a car in the USA is a lot cheaper than in say the UK or even India.
That is because it is a cultural thing here, which keeps car prices down.
Ditto for gas prices - thanks to the "brotherhood" between the US oil companies and the oil producing Middle Eastern nations.

I don't think it is fair to compare Canada with the European countries you mentioned because those countries are already at a later stage of development than Canada.
Those countries already have single currency, strong social sector, EU protectionism, etc. going for them, whereas Canada is a much newer country, depending on immigration for its growth and is not part of a protected community (regardless of the NAFTA, which benefits USA more than Canada or Mexico).

After reading so many posts, I have stopped surveying more about the cost of living. First reason is that I now know that what would it be/month and secondly it depends on case to case, but with a buffer of 10-50 % on various mindsets, the average would be approx.. 1800/2000 CAD

see,

1 BHK - 800/1000 (in my case we are two)
Grocery - 200 CAD
Phone - 100 CAD
Transport - 100 CAD
TV Cable - 50 CAD
Internet - 50/75 CAD
Education - 300/400 CAD
Insurance - I do not know
GAS - I do not know

Now, please shoot, whether I am right or wrong?

canada is dirt cheap compared to europe but I believe the cost of living is much less in the US (except if you are living in an expensive apt) but even in 'expensive' cities like NYC, etc. you can find very nice apartments for 850 dollars a month etc.

groceries etc. are definitely cheaper in the US
