What goes up, comes down eventually. If we are in Canada, we shouldn't jump with joy about the booming IT sector in India. It's our loss here in North America. It simply means we won't get good jobs and projects here because of our jobs are outsourced in India or China, or Philipines (take your pick).

Consider this. You're working in a Canadian IT company, getting $60,000 an year. One fine day, you get to know that due to the cost factor - your job has been outsourced to India. What would you do, or think? Would you say to yourself, 'Wow! Great. I am really happy that my job has gone to India.' If it's so, then sure, you guys have justified yourself in posting 'India Shining' threads here, every now and then.

If we have come to Canada, then it shouldn't matter to us whether India's economy is booming or going down the drain.

At the end of the day, it's just a hype. I reiterate the fact that IT guys, Engineers, Doctors, Scientists have always been getting a good/handsome salaries in India. Their lifestyle has always been high. They could always buy good cars, houses etc. As for a fresh Graduate to get $20,000/month, please ask someone who is living outside 4, 5, or 6 Metro cities. The life is still the same for those Graduates from small cities, who are not exposed to the better schooling and speaking English is a daredevil act for them.

Well, I could go on and on. But, now can I have brickbats directed towards me please ;)

Cheers!!
Preet...

Economics says everythng that goes up comes down - yeah ?? How about the following ?

1. Population
2. Indian Stock Market
3. Price of Gold
4. Inflation
5. Real Estate prices .

Febpreet - You have said that the boom is only a hype and there were engrs / doctors earning handsome sals before also - Q - Did India ever witness the kind of back office processing and IT off shoring as it does today ?? And all that money is coming from abroad . These options were never there in yester decades my friends and hence has raised the salaries and lifestyle.

On the one hand you say that its a hype and such situation existed before also and will end as the hype fizzles out - on the other hand you are concerned at the flow of jobs from N America / elsewhere to India implying that jobs ARE going increasingly to India . Thats sounds contradictary .

For 5 years I lived in the oblivion feeling the same as you do till I visited India for 5 months last year and found average people getting 25-30 K jobs on telephonic interviews !!! Majority of Indian immigrants are good english speakers urban males and not farmers or english impaired . I do not know why do we have to look at farmers and common populace when we do not belong there .

As far as jobs moving to India and production moving to China is concerned - the trend is here to stay due to cost factors . Being aware of the reality gears you better .

I could say more but I would perhaps be repeating all again .

My Friend doing exceptionally good is leaving for India in First week of Sep.

Both husband and wife are getting $20 Lakhs each to work in software company. I believe them as they were doing pretty good out in Canada for past 5 years. So, I am sure somthing is going on in India which is making people go back. Hard to believe as it's been only 3 year before I left India.

It is good to see India prosper, but this raises an important question: 1-10% of population is being paid salaries matching their western counterpart. What happens to rest of the country. I could see gap between rich and poor increasing. More educated youth being unempoyed which can create a chaos in years to come, if this disaparity of wealth is not brought to rest.

Well, things also do not really too good for canada !! Canada is making same mistakes, what India did 50 years ago !!

Dividing the society based on culture, religion. Has anybody been listeing statements for Religion based funding ?? Did you listen $32 M being spend on Multicultural groups ??

In India not everyone is Engineer, working in IT, Doctor, Scientist or a holder of a higher education. There are BAs, BCom's as well. The so called BPOs or Call centres that you guys are quoting here lose people pretty often. Ask them about the attrition rate, even if the employees are getting 15-20k. It's only because call-centres is not a healthy place to work and raise a family in the long run. Everyone in India knows that, unless you're working as in thier HR, IT, Administration, or Accounts deptt. Neither graduates remain in the call centres for much longer.

In Delhi, I have seen people who are still working for 10-12k, because majority of them are not Engineers, IT professionals and sick of working graveyard shifts in your so called BPOs (most of them are call centres - fyi).

So, 'Shimla', your friend might be having a very good education and experience under their belt. Morever, they are IT guys, and India is hot for IT right now. But, can people who are going ga-ga over India's new hot job market say about the other higher percentage of a regular graduates who are having trouble finding jobs and even getting close to 20k a month?

For a moment, think about millions of Graduates who are not into IT, Call-Centres, Banking, chartered accountacy etc. I am sure you will find many, if you open your eyes from the so called shine.

This argument will never end, trust me. I will stick to whatever I have said over here and which is the ground reality in India. Not everyone is getting 2 million Rs. an year in India. Everyone knows that. But, they might have their own reasons not to believe it. Well, what else to say....

Febpreet I agree with you but to contradict myself I agree with Fido and Shimla too. The point of discussion here is India’s economic growth in these few years, which is indeed true…India has splurged and is growing steadily. If today it is IT, call centers, outsourcing, tomorrow the growth bubble will be in some other sector. India is growing in tourism and in pharmaceuticals too. I live in Latin America, Caribbean and any damn medicine we buy here or is brought in by WHO says manufactured for blah…blah co. of Canada/UK, Made in India (especially Pune). HIV/AIDS medicines are mainly produced in India are considered best of quality and very cheap too.

I agree with you when you say not everyone is making Rs.20K in India especially the simple, BA’s, B.com’s and who are not working in IT or call centers. Yes it is true but isn’t it true for any other country be it India or Canada, not everyone in Canada works white collar or is being paid $100K a year, same is for US, UK…anywhere…any country in the world the disparity in society is always been there. I wait for that day when the growth, centered currently at metropolitan cities reaches small cities and eventually to our villages (that day will also come…we are moving towards it). The discussion here was on India’s growth splurge and its affect on salaries, expensive lifestyle. India is definitely changing, I like it that today the world has stood up and is watching us. Few days ago I read an article which said India is like an Elephant, Slow, recently woken up, in slumber, but very strong! Three economies to watch for are Brazil, China and India.
