Your Plan may be valid, but the execution does not seem pratical and logical.
How can you decide if you want to immigrate by living as a visitor in batches of 6 months (if at all thats possible for long)? Besides the house, weather and culture (neighbourhood), you also need to "actually" work and earn here to be able to gauge if Canada is suitable for you, especially after living for so long in the US.
A more logical solution would be to RENT a furnished house (or a portion of the house) for the duration of your stay for evaluation purpose, live out your dream, do your evaluations, make a decision, obtain the PR and then do the final transition if it suits you. I am sure the little more that you will spend in RENT will more than compensate for the TROUBLE you are comtemplating...
On a side note, with appreciating CAD and weak US housing market, many Canadians should be seriously thinking of investing in US properties...
All the best and do share your decision with the board.

I'm going to figure this out, then I'll post what happened.
I'm going to talk this over with the consulate to see if we can get some clarity. I'll be sure to post.
I like the idea of renting a place. I'd just like to unpack someplace and stay.
If it starts to be a big hassel, I'll take it as a sign.
