Hi,

I want to say NO and NEVER, but I want to stop at just NO.

It was there once. "Say What"??
Some people had two sets of Parents. One Father and One Step Father and One Mother and One Step Mother too. The poor guy was broke at the end of the day and they found that the Government owed him money to keep him fed and clothed. So they decided to close the BIGGEST loop hole in the tax system and keep us well fed and looked after. That is why half the Canadians are FAAT. The other half are trying and trying and trying....
Then they said, from now on, we are going to have non-refundable tax credit. Which means you have to look into a mirror and drool over it. It is there, but you only see it......

So, No tax breaks or 'refunds' for the money you send to your Parents. But if they are here for an year......... ah..

You got the message.

Freddie.

Some one asked me once what is 'FUNDAS"?
Return is what you file such as a "Tax Return".
Rebate is the money you get, when you give a Coupon to the shop keeper.
Refund is the money we all look for from the Canadian Tax man after filing a tax return. It is always delayed by these slow computers and strike.

Thanks,
Kayani

Kayani,

I will provide you here with a link to the web and a few lines from their quotes. Please follow this through the Revenue Canada phone numbers. (CCRA) They will ask you to submit the claim at the end of the year and keep all of the papers for audit.

If your Mom is a PR, then, she might provide you the dependent deductions, also ask them about it.

I think if anyone is a visitor, though may depend upon you while in India or elsewhere, will not provide you with the amount that you can claim for her in the tax filing, while she is here with you, visiting.

LINK TO THEIR WEB SITE.: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/5000-g/5000-g-lp-06e.pdf

"Amounts for non-resident dependants
You may be able to claim an amount for certain dependants who live
outside Canada if they depended on you for support.
If the dependants already have enough income or assistance for a
reasonable standard of living in the country in which they live, we do
not consider them to depend on you for support. Also, we do not
consider gifts you send them to be support.
If you are filing a paper return, include proof of your payment of
support. If you are filing electronically, keep these documents in case
we ask to see them. The proof of payment has to show your name, the
amount, the date of the payment, and the dependant's name and
address. If you sent the funds to a guardian, the guardian's name and
address also have to appear on the proof of payment."

I would urge you to see a tax consultant or ask the CCRA people for their pamphlets and IT bulletins.

You might get some relief.

Good Luck.

Freddie.
