I was forced by my parents to be get married from a person from my own caste. The reason given by my mom was that people from the same caste have a certain unique set of family values, a unique way of social setup, customs etc.. My mom told me that if I were to get married from a person from anotehr caste, then they would feel out of place in social gatherings, weddings, festivals etc.. as the other party's wavelength would not match.
Also my parents recommened marrying within the own caste so that we could check the other party's family history very easily as it would be very easy to find a link who knew both families.
Despite all this, my parents were very careful not to select people who were closely related to us b'cos of the (fact or rumour) health hazzard of marrying too closely withn the community.
Hope it clears some cloud over this.

I totally agree with TK saab's mother. What she said is exactly right. May be some exceptions. But thats the best advantage one can point out.
