I am trying to find an answer to a question asked by an 8 year old.
Surnames like Bhatt, Chowdhry, Dutt, Patel, Rai, Mallik and many more exist in different communities/ castes/religion. Could there be some ancestral link between Hindu Malliks and Muslim Malliks and likewise for rest.

Yes, I believe so very strongly, because the Indian caste system is older than the advent of Islam in India. Probably the first major wave of Muslims came to India alongwith attack of Mohammad Bin Qasim on Raja Dahir.

By the way, I would say that correct spelling is "Malik" and not "Mallik"..
