Hi Guys,

We are in Surrey, BC and looking for a job for my wife. She's MSc (Comp. Science) and landed 5 months ago. As we understand, it's a waste of time thinking about getting job in own field right now. So, looking for any customer service/admin/office job in Metro Vancouver/ Surrey area. She's having a 'Canadian' experience of about 3 months working in a Notary Office as an Office Administrator.

I would really appreciated if someone can provide any job leads, open house info., internal job postings etc.

May be, we can also use this post to notify others (newcomers) about any such events, or job opportunities in Metro Vancouver area. So far it only exists for Toronto.

Any response in this regard is highly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi Febpreet,

You can mail me the resume using CD e-mail and I can arrange to refer for a customer service job. The job will be in Vancouver area but near skytrain station. You will get phone interview call atleast due to referral and then it is upto you, how you handle it.

There are plenty of entry level jobs in BC currently but for any professional jobs, BC is a big no (except IT) for immigrants.

Preet,
Considering that your wife is M. Sc. comp sci., I belive that she should be looking for oppertunities in that line. In Toronto, I know many B.Sc. comp. sci people in very good job anad that too from private colleges in India. That being said, I know that Vancouver might be a bit harder than in Toronto.
Does she have any experience and if so in what software? (this is the main thing).
In Toronto, we have Skills for change which trains the student in Resume writing/ making cold calls, Identifying companies which are hiring etc.. It takes about a month but they pay for busfare + they have a pot luck at the end of the course. But the main thing is that you wife can find people in the same line from various countries and who are looking for work. She would be able to net work through them and hopefuly get some leads. Like Skills for change (in Toronto), find the appropriate organisation in Vancouver. Let your wife spend a month there. She can do part time work during that time. At the end of a month, they usually get you a job (for sure voluntary jobs- Since she is in IT she will surely get a job). The govt. pay for all this and hence make full use of it.
I personally feel that being educated in M.Sc. (Comp. sci.), She is wasting her talent and energy working in a call centre job or doing menial jobs. Try to speal with the facilitator of the organisation that she will be doing her training (Like skills for change) as to if the Govt. can give them any subsidy/ money while they are doing the training , so that they can be monetarily benifited. I know that many offers free daycare but who knows, if you talk well, maybe they can give your wife some special goodies.
All the best and please do update us about your line of action.

TK A

Footnote : I am basing my article based on 4 or 5 people who were dejected initially (all of them computer science people) and who were ready to take up labour jobs. They took up this training and got jobs in less than 3 months. After 2 years, 3 of them are earning above 65K and two above 80K. Other than IT , I donot think that Canada is ready for any other professions yet.

Go talk to Canadian Career Moves in Newton - Surrey. They specialize in IT, professional and management level job search candidates. Has your wife already applied for a few jobs and basing her assumption on her experience or on what others say?

I know a few Immigrants who work in IT..they didnt seem to have trouble. The market in BC is very good right now. she'll need to find a way to network or find out about opportunities..beyond just reading the newspaper etc.
