TK, I think you raised something valid, vis-a-vis housing.
What is the point of buying a big house in a far away burb, when you have to spend close to 2 hours one way in commuting? Why not buy a townhouse near the city.
But, we are actually imbibed with the housing dream, which is now synonymous to the North American dream. That, if we somehow don't have a detached 3 level house, we are a loser immigrant.
Vivek901,
How's the local economy in Ajax? Are there any decent companies where you can get an employment with the similar pay and spare yourself with this commuting nightmare. Well, only if you consider this as a nightmare per se.
My reason of this thread was to brainstorm the ideas by which we can either reduce our commute times or find an alternative somehow. I have few ideas that I presented earlier, but nothing concrete yet.
By the way how are the toll highways in GTA? Are they any good? Is it only 407?
One workaround I have found is to ask for flexible shift. The last two companies I have worked agreed to that. One company I worked in the past didnt allow it as I was part of shift rotation. Now I leave at around 9:30 and start at around 10 regardless of my location. That allows me to beat the traffic on most days.
407 is expensive and is only good if you live west or east of the Toronto and you work in NorthYork, Yaughan or Markham. Some companies cover for the 407 bill these days; so try including it as part of negotiation. 407 is not an option if you work DT Toronto.
