Hi,
There are shipping agents and freight forwarders in UAE and also around the sea ports near by. They will bring a Container to your location or near by where you can load the 'personal belongings' that you want to ship to a PORT in Canada such as Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. The choice is yours.
They facilitate the shipping of the same as Lesser than a Container Load or as a Full Container Load. You will have to determine the size of your shipment.
A full container could be 20 foot (Twenty) or a 40 foot (Forty) Container. The size of a container is 8.5 x 8 x 20, for the former and 8.5 x 8 x 40 for the latter. This will provide you with the cubic feet in volume. {ONE Cubic Meter is 35.3 Cubic foot}
Make the packages handle-able and get it palletized and wrap them with see through plastic, to avoid pilferage.
You will have to make a shipping list in six-tuplicate (Six copies) with estimated prices. Hang onto a couple for your DECLARATION at the POE.
You will have to INSURE the consignment.
Also check for goods not permitted as Cargo and weed them out.
The booking Agent will provide you with A WAY BILL and the instructions to follow.
In the initial stages the cost will be only an Estimate.
You will have to appoint a CLEARING agent and pay for all of the clearance fees and the charges associated with the goods that you are shipping at BOTH the ends. i.e. which ever port you want to choose to ship it from close by UAE and receive in Canada, closer to your home.
(They will be hefty, especially, for personal belongings. There may not be any custom duties here at the receiving end BUT there will be custom clearing charges, warehousing etc., You will have to pay for the container rental and return of the same to the shipping port in Canada. I.e. for the carrying forward from the Canadian Port to your HOME in Alberta)
Here you have an option to empty the container and take the full possession of the goods and get a rental truck or a firm to help you with its transportation by road, to your HOME in Alberta.
Please make sure that you know the number of days that they provide you with in Canada for the clearance from the Custom Warehouse. Have a Ground Transporter ready, who will carry the same to your place in Alberta and set it up at your residence here. Also make sure you have a nice place to reside. Otherwise find a storage place and ask them to take it there. They cost will be about 180 dollars +/- , a month, there for the Container storage. Investigate all of this after arrival.
Just a word of caution: The expenses you will be incurring for the transportation of the goods might not justify the costs of the goods. The loss of time and troubles you will be enduring will not be worth it. So, consider eliminating the bulky items either by a sale there or parting of them to your friends in UAE. There is a saying here " The GAME is not worth the CANDLE". So, just bring ONLY the most sentimental items and repurchase the same HERE in CANADA and enjoy the shopping spree from time to time - BOX-ing day shopping. You also have the option of shipping the balance of the same by air freight, DOOR TO DOOR.
Here is a cross section of links to the shippers from your location and read and understand the terms used.
