I was talking to a few relatives in India and they told me that the prices of Rice and other pulses have not gone up in India. They were surprised to hear that the prices have gone up in a developed country such as this. Though I do belive that the Indian traders in Canada are just rising the prices on speculation (20-50 % rise is just to fleece us), the overall gradual price increase is justified with the increasing cost on Gas in a country where Gas is not subsidised.
Peace out

From the last time I wrote, the cost of rice / pulses have gone up even more.
Last week, I was shopping around for inexpensive rice and I found that the Indian shops in Mississauga had exhobirant price of rices.
At Kaveri super market in Mississauga, the cheapest BAsmathi rice is $17.99 for a 10 pound bag whereas Priya Sonamasoori is around $14.99 for a 10 Pound bad.
Comparitively, Prices are cheaper at Udhayas 9Kipling and Steels) and at a shop at Islington and Albion.
At Udhayas, Idly rice is now $5.99 for a 8 or a 10 pound bag (Cheapest).
Once again, Does any Desi know of cheaper prices of rice at the WEST end.
Also as a side note, I would like to let CD's know that the price of fruits takes the max. price on my grocery bill. Last night, I bought grapes at $1.59 a pound. I just took 2 large serving of Grapes and the cost was $3.12. With Bananas at $0.59 a pound, Apple at $1.12 a pound etc.. (these are some of the cheapest fruits), the cost is rediculous.
To counteract this, I would suggest to the CD's to visist any farmer's market at the closing time (Most farmer's market's are open on Sat. and Sunday's only) and you can get a good deal. Other option is to hoard fruits which are on Deals.
Any CD's view appriciated, who can give information as to how to survive during these difficult times.
Peace
