On the advise of fellow desi's that I know, I am trying to switch to brown rice instead of ordinary rice. I went to Bulk barn and bought a small quantity of Basmathi Brown rice. I cooked the rice for 30 mins. and found that it was not well cooked. I had to pour lot of meat gravy to eat this rice.
I am wondering if there are any desi's in this forum who use brown rice. Where do they buy from and how do they make it taste as better as possible. Also is there any positively very strong points in using this type of rice?

Brown rice is any time better than white rice but costlier than white rice. Generally rice is carbohydrates and develops a belly. I suggest if you switch to whole wheat then your diet and health will be good. If you are doing exercise regularly you will be o.k with brown rice. Did you consult your family member before you change the food grains colour. Good luck and post your experiences to Canadian Desi website.

I have personally not used brown basmati rice, but regular brown rice.
It takes longer to cook and requires a higher water measurement.

Other thing you can try is wild rice.

Brown rice will still be carbs.
The only difference is that because of less processing, some of the vitamins (esp. B series) are still intact.

I imagine though most of the vitamins will be lost during cooking.

TK and others,

We have been using for quite some time. Here in Bangalore also, we are using brown rice. Here is how to cook:

Rinse brown rice for abt 8-16 hours. Overnight soaking is good. If want to cook for dinner, soak it in the morning. Once rinsed, use a pressure cooker. Cooks great in that. Dont use regular containers (saucepan). Rinsed brown rice provides much more fiber than any other rice. If u r making bisibele baath (south dish), brown rice is superb.

Happy cooking.

At any Bulk Barn Store. One is there at Dixie mall ( Mississauga and Etobicoke border at the QEW).
Is wild rice healthy? Is it healthier than Brown rice?
Hope this helps

I find brown rice very heavy; it also has a lot of starch, i.e. carbs, which is not a very good thing.

I've liked wild rice when I had it outside, so I'd like to give it a try.
