Hi

Does anyone have a wood or timber home that can shed some light on what may be some of the factors to consider when buying a wood home? I mentioned before that I'm moving back to Toronto soon and we've fallen in love with a home in Georgetown made of wood. We have never owned a wood home before and don't know anyone who does and we're just not 100% convinced it is as durable as a brick home.

I can't seem to find much info on the web either...or maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

Before we make any offer, we would get the whole place inspected for sure.

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks

PP

Loser,
Her posting is not very clear. Are the walls made of logs or are they two wooden walls (inside and outside) lined with insulation in between.?
I am assuming that the external and internal face of the wall is wood (or made with logs). The whole structure is visible.
Log houses :
These types of houses are for the rich people and one who can pay for their hydro through their nose. Since there is no insulation, heating costs in the winder would be more. Besides the exposed nature of wood to narural elements such as rain, heat and snow will require extensive maintainece needs (like need to water proof, damp proof, termite proof each and every year).
The only advantage is the aesthetic value of the house

Wooden inside and exterior with insulation in between :
You save only on the hydro. Still lot of external work needs to be done each year.

Conclusion : If you are not earning atleast atleast150 k a year (household income), I would stay away from these kind of houses unless you are buying the house more for land rather than the house resale value.
