Like Patrick mentioned, call up your city hall. They should tell you the options. Also, if possible, go thru the by-laws (that will be a 2 week job though). One of my neighbours - he is in construction and hence my assumption is, he knows the rules - recently widened the driveway. 2-3 weeks back, we saw a city by law officer taking pictures of his driveway. He hasn't got any notice yet, but he is not bothered about enquiring about it with the city hall as well. So I am not sure what is going on.

Hello Desiguy,
I work in this line and hence know a bit (not fully though to answer you full question) about the process.
It all depends on the city by law. Some cities have by laws on the website. For example, in Brampton you will have to give min. 40 % of your outdoor area for greenery (and can not pave or Ashphalt it).
The by law for your plot/area can show you how many car parking is to be provided for your house. Generally it varies from 2 to4 (one in the garage and one in the driveway). The city can explain it to you.
I donot see the hassle in parking in the greenery (lawn) and in the front. it is within your boundary (plot) and hence a ticketing officer SHOULD GENERALLY NOT ticket your car since it is parked INSIDE your property.
Widening the driveway is a pain. You may have to cut the curb (which is very costly if it has to be done) to widen the driveway.
Parking behind your house (if possible) should not be a problem at all.
(FYI, in a corner lot the rear setback is atleast 6 m wide and hence can take a car easily. Also the side setbacks are either 1.2m / 1.50m for each house and thus gives you 2.4m or 3.0 m which is enough for a car to drive through. Just donot leave the car on the side of the house (in teh side setback) since it may hamper a fire code of access. Take it to the rear so that people can escape through the side in case of a fire.)

Peace
