Yes, provide them an ample proof as to why you were not able to attend. Attach Dr.'s note, for sure.

My wife couldn't attend the ceremony as she was in India during that time, so I attached the return ticket to verify what date she was coming back and that she was in fact out of the country at that moment. They rescheduled to the later date without any hassle. I didn't have to call - just sent them a letter stating the facts.
