Most of my experience - 70% driving and 30% flying. A good number of times, they have swiped my passport, even though I have been a frequent crosser. This is what I have observed during road crossing. The camera captures your licence plate and if their records show that you are not a frequent crosser, they most likely will check your documents more diligently, that includes swiping the passport. If needed, the primary inspector will refer you to secondary inspection. At the secondary inspection, more information is asked and gathered.
I am not sure whay you need to be scared....maybe anxious, but scared? On the previous run, did they tell you not to try entering the US again? If not, you are ok. Canadian citizens seem to enjoy a more leniant passage through immigration, but again, it's all up to the officer at that time. Just answer only the questions asked and answer them truthfully.

Hi, the first things I want to suggest is don't be nervous or scared...what for.....You haven't done anything wrong why are you scared of crossing borders with a Canadian passport? As a PR the things were different and you got a rejection, fine but that was past, now it has nothing to do with your current status. Please approach immigration confidently and give them the reasons for your trip. Immigration officers mostly watch body language and unnecessary nervousness can work against you. Dimple and TK has stated very clearly that if one doesn’t have a criminal record or were not refused for criminal reasons you shouldn’t be worrying at all. Keep your cool and all the best for your US trip…………..the medium of commuting doesn’t matter…be it driving…flying or by train.
Btw, I speak from experience because I was rejected once the US visa from India which made me very angry as it was my fault, lack of confidence and stammering. Today after world travelling for 10 years the confidence has escalated to new heights that I get angry if they don't call me "Madam"!

With the CDn. passport, it is sort of a right for them to let you pass (they donot have it written anywhere, but with Cdn. passport, it guarantee's you free passing across the border). Again, it is your right to cross over to the USA in any of the 4 modes of transportation ( ship, Car/road, Rail or Air) and they will just let you pass. having been refused entry to USA based on your then PR status was for another reason and will not affect your current entry to the USA with the now newly got Canadian passport.
