Is there any student guidance counselor available on CD?

I know that schools do offer their services at no cost.

Please give some ideas about career options for students not interested in science field.

Thanks,

aarey boss- how about real estate agent?

Actually I go to several schools and talk to them about the financial field. Upto last academic year all were gung ho about it but now I am getting 'eggs and tomatoes thrown at me'

Nonetheless there are several still interested.

How about becoming a teacher, pilot, professor.

Or go for the unconventional- become Russell Peters, Deepa Mehta, Rishi Mehta, Sachin Tendulkar- dare to be different.

Read foll article

Dare to be different! Dare to be an innerpreneur!

The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man.-George Bernard Shaw (opening lines by moderator, Ms. Syerah Virani at the power evening on Nov. 25)

Increasingly, it would seem that the South Asian community is slowly breaking away from the beaten paths of traditional professions of doctors, engineers, accountants and the like to follow their inner passions and desires. This started in India many decades ago giving rise to, among several others, M.F. Hussain- world acclaimed artist, Vishwanath Anand- international chess grandmaster and Sachin Tedulkar, cricketer extraordinaire. This propensity to excel in ‘unusual’ fields has propagated overseas and in Canada we now have globally renowned comedian, Russell Peters, director Deepa Mehta and skating champion Emanuel Sandhu to name a few.
It is now the trend to build a business following one’s innermost inspirations like many fashionistas. The buzzword now is no more “entrepreneur” or “netpreneur” but “innerpreneur” as coined by Ron Rentel in his book Karma Queens, Geek Gods & Innerpreneurs. To this end the Young Professionals arm of the Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce in Toronto held a panel discussion on Nov 25 at the RBC auditorium in downtown Toronto.
Mr. Jas Brar of Entripy Clothing (EC), better known for his Desi Wear brand of t-shirts, told a totally engrossed audience of his many trials, tribulations and successes. He first started making t-shirts in school and selling them for a profit. He then launched his brand Desi Wear which lost money for several years, while his custom made line of t-shirts, EC, made money. Nonetheless, he persisted with his inspiration and finally after many years of hard grueling work he is now going to open his first Desi Wear retail outlet on Dec 6 this year.
Ms. Anita Majumdar, well-known for her theatrical triumphs Fish Eyes, Bombay Black, The Misfit and also for her CBC movie Murder Unveiled told us of how much she had to convince her parents that she wanted to follow her passion and not get into the rut of a traditional vocation. She applied and got into the National Theatre School of Canada, a topnotch theatre school in British Columbia that only accepts 10 students internationally. It was a great moment of elation for her. However she was continuously at odds with her parents and at one time even chucked her dream to toe the line and go along with her parent’s wishes; but she was totally crestfallen. Her parents realized this and finally gave into her desires as they would rather see a happy child than a miserable one. We now have our very ‘Sharon Prabhakar’ (ace stage actress of the ‘70’s in Mumbai) in Canada. She is currently working on a new stage production Shakuntala.
Then came DJ Jiten’s turn, who said he started mixing at the age of 6 and at 17 while attending a party, the contracted DJ did not show up, prompting some of the promoters of the event to ask around for a DJ. Jiten jumped at the chance, had his cassettes and vinyls (no CDs or computers in those days) brought in from home and simply floored the crowd that evening with his Hindi mixes- something unheard of in those days. From that momentous night onwards, offers started pouring in and people flocked to buy his mixes. “This was a classic case of ‘luck is where preparation meets opportunity’. Had I not been prepared and had not done mixes before, I would not have achieved my current prominence”, declared Jiten.
Mr. Sanjay Burman then took centre stage and recounted his story of having racked up several high points in his filming career by age 27, including best picture (Spider) award at the Toronto Film Festival, the Palme d’Or and other honors. He then quit the industry to become a hypnotherapist and write inspirational and self-help articles and books. Sanjay is a multi-faceted success story having gained eminence in several fields. The inscription on his t-shirt, which he handed out free to each attendee, embodies his raison d’etre: “Normal is boring: Do everything they tell you not to do, if you want to succeed”.
Moderator Syerah Virani also told her story of how she went from being an accomplished corporate lawyer ensconced comfortably in the ivory towers of Bay Street to following her inner passions. As all of us know, she is the driving force now behind mybindi.com- the site to visit for everything South Asian cool!
There was thunderous applause following the discussion that was packed with inspirational quotes. One could feel the electricity in the air as the confluence of people identified with the achievers on the panel, all dreaming of following their inner desires and accomplishing their non-conformist goals, of blazing new trails, of going out of the boring and joining the ranks of the new breed, daring to be different and excelling as innerpreneurs!

Yeah man just follow your inner dreams and passions- right on!

Im not a guidance counsellor but I do work in the vocational / employment counselling field. Can you either provide some more information?
You can do free career tests online, but good career inventories are not free, unless you go to a career guidance office and take them (or a career planning program).

This is for a grade 10 student who is choosing subjects for the next grade. Eventually student's career direction will depend on the subjects choosen in Grade 11/ 12.

Student would like to go with English, world religion, envoirnmental science, anthropology, psychology, sociology, math functions, dance, travel and tourism.

One thing the teen could do is to check out the Univ course s/he is interested in and then work back to figure out the required high school courses.

FYI - my teen is currently taking functions and relations; while this is a good course, it is not as rigorous as the Indian courses especially the ICSE stream.

Let me know if you need any info - I can check with my teen and revert to you.

Good luck.

Thank you- always maintained that courses in Indian schools are better than those here.

Some of the career options associated with the above subjects can be easily guessed.

However, with the service economy withering and the North American job markets shrinking, jobs in the service sector may no longer be attractive by the time this student becomes a graduate.

On the contrary, science subjects (:( this student does not want to pursue) can lead to: engg., architecture, agriculture, energy and construction jobs that could offer security and great opportunities in N.America for many years to come.
