May be true to some extend in NA in some part but not all parts though, however still if given a chance and right opportunity the masses in the so called third worlds still would honestly prefer to live in the first world for the said benefits in the article in spite of the other drawbacks as stated.
We got only one life after all isn't?

Many stores in US and Canada are open 24 hours/extended hours. So the writer's experience of 'first world' is not correct as it based only on his experience of Brussels.
Also, not all business have holidays often as reflected in the article. May be applicable to the professionals and big organizations, but ever heard about people working 12 hours a day, 7 days a week here in NA?
On the contrary though, I have heard that Europeans are more workoholics than NAs. Looks like this writer has very biased opinions of Developed countries. Mere a generalization and nothing else.
I still think, third world has a lot to catch up with first 'developed' world. Alas! This topic has done to death in the past, so nothing new to add.

Have not read the whole article, but I must say that I have seen people in NA who do work 12-16 hours a day and then 7 days a week.
The first example is in my previous office (design firm) where the bosses (European immigrants) do work as stated above. They even forced me to do it but paid me on salary basis. One of the bosses even had a fulfilled personal life in which he had a happy marriage and 3 kids.
The other instance that I have heard is in some Manufacturing / Wireless networking firm which run 24/7. Though people are on shifts, they do work12-16 hours a day and 7 days a week for the overtime. In one extreme case, I have heard of a person who sleeps just 4 or 5 hours a day and the rest of the time he works in his workspace.
The third instance that I have heard of is when some Desi / Sri lankan immigrants work like the above (in diff. jobs) to pay debt / earn extra money.
We also have heard of the TTC ticket dispenser who worked like 12 hours or more a day , 7 days a week for his salary to come above $ 100K a year and it was documented in the public servants website for people earning more than 100 K in Canada.
So it is not uncommon in Canada but may not be true for a software / Finance job which typically runs from 9-5 pm , 5 days a week.
