Hi CD's
We landed in Toronto about 4 weeks back and really like the place. We have just rented an apartment and have kind of settled down.
I am from the Banking industry with 5 years exp in customer service in retail branch banking and my husband is an electronic engineer with 14 yrs exp in the telecom industry( wireless division). We have been appling for jobs on workopolis, monster, craigslist and the list goes on and on.
Wanted some help from CD's regarding other ways to apply for hidden jobs. Also if any of you are from the banking or telecom industry and know of any internal openings pls do let us know.
Thanks in advance for all the help.
Jigcy
You will have to do all of the spade work just as you are doing now. Only thing is now you have new leads and new avenues. If you have already followed them, then you are way ahead of the game by miles.

we are in the same boat as you, only difference is we came 4 months back and yet to find job.
First and foremost, get all the initial formalities completed like SIN, PR, Medical and bank account. simultaneously try gettting driving licence. We did from Anita driving school. They charge $25 for each lession for an hour.
Tell your husband to get certification done from OACCT. It will take some time, since they ask references and experience letter etc which is time consuming. They even send questionaire to your previous employer/ immediate superiors so, takes 2-3 months and they charge $175/- for certification.
Try to get licence since without licence, nobody will give you job.
It is your choice of course, to still further waste time applying for jobs and remain jobless or else go for Co-op session and work voluntarily for 3 months and get canadian experience and refernce without which nobody will give you job.If you wish I will give you details of co-op programme in mississauga which guarantees placement after 5 months 75-80%. (we came to know very late about this programme so wasted 2 months just applying for job).
Remember one thing, without canadian education, experience and references, it is useless to try for job in canada. If one of you have time, then go and talk to settlement worker, who will guide you.
Hope by this time (4 weeks since you came), you must have visited
Human Resources (Govt and private) by now and atleast attended 2-3 workshop for improving on your cv and job opportunities in your field.
welcome to canada and all the best.

Hi Gopalpai,
Thanks for all the advice and feedback. We have been here for 2 months now and both of us have landed with jobs in our fields. I have got a contract job and my husband had just got a job in his specialised field. My husband did attend a job workshop for engineers at Skills for change which was very useful and got a job the very next week ( not through them). It is really hard to get jobs in Canada due to the canadian work exp required but everyone has a diff experince.
We have already finished our SIN, medical, PR etc.
All the best in your job hunt.
Jigcy
gopalpai can you please give the details about the co-op program of 5 months in mississauga which gives placement guarentee....
