Now that I'm flying next week, I will pursue all the contract employers you mentioned. Many thanks!

That's correct. Wait till you land, get settled, know a thing or two about your neighborhood and the city, establish a local address and a phone number, and then try. Employers will not consider anyone who is outside the country.

Hi AutomotiveEngineer,

It's gonna be alright, don't worry too much.

Your wife already has Job, and in the worst case if you have to go back then with the experience you had there you will again get job with same or better profile. So in short you have nothing to loose.

Search all job portals, use the keywords from your resume and just google with cityname. in your resume just write the location as Toronto(Coz you ll be here next week) and recruiter do check this. And apply for all jobs starting today. Initial email communication with the agency(recruiters or company) will take some time and by that time you ll be here.

Don't just look for survival, try for the best and you will end up getting something good, or better.

All the best,

Yes, my aim is not just survival, it's to get a good job.

I'll add Toronto in resume and search. Thanks for the heads-up!

I don't mind the income disparity as long as I have a decent job. Moreover, what you have mentioned is related to Production job, whereas my role is related to after-sales like training the Technicians, auditing dealership, Dealer Development etc.

I was being a bit harsh.

1. SALES :

But if you want you can easily get a job as a car sales person in a car dealership. Not After sales but just straight sales person. This is a PURE commission job , they don't even pay you base salary..you get commission on each car you sell. What you sell is what you get. Hard job and you have to be good at sales. Its a good entry level job and you can then move into your field from there, once you have a foot in the door. They are ALWAYS hiring and easy to get this job.

2. If you are good at diagnosis, you can actually work as a car mechanic over here. In India its considered to be a low level job , but here you can make decent money. You will have to get your hands dirty with oil changes etc. They are always hiring for these jobs.

3. Quality control. This will be a labour job and pays a few bucks more than minimum wage. You will be manually inspecting and evaluating car parts at various assembly lines at third party car parts manufacturers and parts and suppliers. They are always hiring for this job.

None of the above jobs are directly in your line, but they are the easiest to get into the Automotive workforce in Canada and then depending on your luck and hard work , you can hopefully get into your field :)

Expect to start at a lower level then your job in India, and move upwards. Almost no one gets a job at the same level except maybe IT guys and Finance guys ( to some extent )..due to the dreaded NO CANADIAN experience and NO CANADIAN education...they DON'T care about Indian education or Indian experience :(..no matter how smart or intelligent you are or how much experience you have and which Indian university you went to.

Foreign credentials are pretty much worthless and useless in this country..sad but true :(

You are pretty much starting from scratch over here..but your wife is and will start at the same level as her Indian job.

Car mechanic’s job is licensed and you need to complete and pass a 3 years community college course to be a car technician.

Employment agencies like Kelly et al are just crooks.

They take a HUGE cut from your salary..if possible get a job directly from the company as opposed to these recruiting firms and temping agencies like Kelly , Drake, Randstand, Aplleone etc.

Have you been provieded accomodation by your wife's employer ?

1.Cell Phone :

Go fro WinD Mobile . They are cheaper. Both their voice plan and data plan. Go for Pay Before as opposed to Pay After to avoid surprise charges. for $ 35 month you will get unlimited calling and data plan.

Bell, Rogers,Telus are crooks !

2.Groceries :

Food Basics , No Frills , Freshco or Wal-Mart.

3. Department Store : Pots, Pans, Clothes, Shoes, Jackets, Chairs, Tables etc

Wal-Mart

4. Dollarama for cheap goods required in household. DOLLARAMA :)

5. Coffee :

Only Tim Hortons :) No Starbucks ..too expensive.

6. Public Transit : TTC monthly pass for $ 140/month ..both bus and train ( subway aka Metro ) included.

7. Eating Out : Cheap Indian and Chinese buffets. samosas 3 for $ 1.00. White people food and restaurants NOT included in the above.

8. The Beer Store for beer and LCBO for wine. You get 24 bottles of beer for about $ 30 at The Beer Store, depending on yhe brand you go for. And 1 litre bottle of wine for $ 10 at LCBO.

Ofcourse the above is only if you want to live a cheap DESI life and 90 % of desis do that :)..if you want to live a GORA life and spend money , Other options available like bars, clubs, expensive shopping malls, restaurants, cars, stores.

I am familiar with BOTH the Goras and Desis..and I have lived both the lives :)

Desis have a CASH mentality and Savings mentality ..Goras have a CREDIT mentality and Spending mentality.

Goras live for today and don't leave anything behind for kids and family..Desis live for tomorrow and want to leave something for their kids and family.

Desis mostly live poor and die rich :) ..most of them are house rich and cash poor.

Goras are good at using credit, loans, leverage etc..they don't care about bankruptcy etc either.
