Hi All,

I will soon be landing in Canada. I have about 10 years of sales and marketing experience in IT, Telecom and Education Industry. Wanted to know what are the prospects of sales related jobs in Toronto and how much one can expect to earn monthly.

Also how does one go about job hunting with no Canadian experience. One thing I am sure about myself is my communication and sales skills. Willing to take up lower sales jobs for gathering experience.

Opportunities in retail sales are there. Companies like Futureshop, Best Buy, Staples, London Drugs & some other local companies do recruit sales guys like us. But only at entry-level for which starting salary is around $8.5 per hour. Apart from sales activities, be prepared to clean shelves, empty garbage bins, stock shelves plus lifting heavy boxes as & when required. Plus be willing to stand & walk for the whole shift.

One of my friends (he will laugh on reading this) quit his job within 3-4 days because of this.

I too have about 14 years experience in IT sales in India & I am doing this job for about one & half year now. Even after getting Canadian experience, I still don't get interviews. In recognition of my good performance (?) I have been shifted to selling appliances like fridge, washing machines, etc.

You could try tele-marketing for telecom companies, banks, etc. as they tend to pay better.

Real estate, finance, insurance, etc. are good sectors to consider if you are willing to make the change.

Be willing to accept that you have to start your career like you did 10 years ago & have to gradually climb up the ladder. If lucky, you could get a good job too.
