It is just a virus on local machine that sends unsolicited mails to all friends in address book . Pls ask your friend to run a good anti virus .

He can email yahoo from trouble signing in link, "my account has been compromised" option. If he can verify the identity using forgot password link, then he can recover the yahoo or hotmail account if those have not been changed by the hacker.

This happened to me recently.
The Yahoo account in that case was actually hacked and several emails sent to folks on the contact list with links to spam sites (banking, trading, medicines, porn, etc.) - very embarassing for me.
All those spam emails sent from the account were actually in the Sent Items folder so it's almost certain that it was hacked into.
I never could figure out with absolute certainity how it happened, however, I had been using a temporary computer with low security, which probably caused this.
I suspect there were spyware, trojan horses or other TSR programs installed on there that trap user IDs and passwords.
I changed the password and so far so good.
