Hello : I want few opinions on some of dilemmas I am going through....I am just exploring that when i go back to work in June 2010, what are my options in terms of child care ? In June 2010 my one son will be 4.5 yrs and other would be 1 yr old. I can put them in child care ( approx $ 1000 for younger and $ 400 for elder). Or I can hire a nanny for both of them......I do not have any experience with the latter option of nanny.....is day care better or nanny ? do u hire nanny thru agency or direct ? how much are we looking at in terms of expense ? how many months in advance do we need to approach them ? what abt their reliability (direct and even thru agency)...how do we know that agency hired after thorough check ? I know there is no yes or no answer....but your opinions or suggestions based on your / friends experience....Also does nanny do any other work besides child care at home ? We were considering live out nanny....I can ask all these questions by calling an agency but want to get some idea before i call them....any suggestions whom to call ?

Thanks.....

The current rate for a nanny is around $10-$12 an hour (through an agency). So assuming 160 hours, this works to $ 1600 or more. If you give them boarding you can deduct the boarding charges from them (say like $400 a month) but they will work only 8 hours a day only or as much as you would like them to work on an hourly basis. Nanny's are good in a way since they come to your house and you donot need to dress and drop your children. On the other hand, Most nannies would just be looking after and feeding your kids and may not actually do other services (like reading them a book, do crafts etc...). Some nannies watch TV after you leave. also remember that with a nanny, your children may not have enough hours to play and interact with other kids and that is a disadvantage.
There are some people who hire a nanny but then the nanny is combined for 2 families and they they share the costs.
I think that for 2 children, daycare is the best and cheaper option.

Hope this helps.
Peace by TK

You can get a live in nanny or a live out nanny. The live in Nanny is a cheaper option and more flexible as the person lives in your home. Needless to say you have to meet the eligiblilty criteria and be willing to give up some of your privacy. Details about the program can be found here:

We had a live in nanny for three years. Like you we have two children and found that it turned out more economical to have a live in nanny than to pay for daycare for two kids .. also, we were not comfortable leaving my younger one in care as he was only over a year old. We got our nanny throught the agency caregivers.ca. We have had a wonderful experience with her. We found her very dependable, loving and caring and a very hard worker. For families like ours who have no support system in Canada a nanny becomes a great help, especially when children fall sick (and you cannot drop them at daycare).

Hi TK, thanks for the reply.....my elder one would go to school..so he will interact and play over there and do some activities....and younger one is too young for any activity ....cost as u say nanny $ 1600 vs day care $ 1400 or 1600 in some cases (1000 or 1200 ) + 400...comes to same....

Aashu,
It is not as clear cut as that. What I said was that you should not expect anything less than $ 1600 a month but it can even go as high as $ 2000 or more easily. I also think we the employers are now mandated to provide the nanny with extended health coverage.
Advantage with nanny is that she can do some more work in the house like cooking, cleaning etc... (but you have to check it).
The agency that you are bringing the nanny from will do all the back ground checks, so you need not worry.
Again, I have always heard from people (who might be in the same financial status as you) that a nanny cost benefit ratio does not work out for 2 children but then it is your choice and you should research properly. Also as said, if you can pool in one or 2 more children, then it will work perfectly.
