Sorry-I apologize to Dan that same message got forwarded to his private email my mistake.
I am not sure how many people have worked on H1B visa in USA here. First of all these is the only way for Indian born people to get US green card except marriage.
I am one of them who tired 2 times my green card in USA while living 7 yrs on H1b visa. Most of the people land first time in US with small desi consulting company.
Now days most of the fortune 1000 companies and big consulting companies stopped hiring full time H1b people but these companies don't mind to hire as a consultant or corp-corp hiring.
It's easy to get h1B visa and green card processing with small consulting companies as compare to big company. Big company does not take a week to layoff if you don’t have project. It means you are out of status and your green card processing (except you can transfer your I485 stage) is gone.
Indians who are living in US (immigrant and next generation) are most successful immigrant community in the world.

Why these H1B people don’t live in India –
Its same question we can ask why lot of Indian in Canada are doing labor job even they were doing good in India.
You can see in Calgary downtown after 5:00 pm all cleaning work is done by Indian people (like Mexican in USA). There is nothing wrong and all jobs are respectable. But a lot of them have good agriculture land/tractor/jeep in India (especially Punjab)? I never understood that. It’s all about own preference where people like to work or live Usa/Canada/India.

Why would the people be at the mercy of the consulting company ? They could easily return to Bangalore and get a super job, no ?

I am not sure how one can live on an H1B for 7 years. I thought the initial H1B was for 3 years and you could get an extension for another 3 years. After that you need to go back to your country and re apply after a year.
Am I missing something here?
If you have applied for Green card more than a year back, you get to extend 7th year, 8th year etc... until you get to hear the result of your GC processing.
I was in H1B for 8 years.... I hope the process hasn't changed.

This is what I heard from a friend who is on a H1B, and took permanant residency in Canada, as "plan B".
He said that even if the green card application was filed, the H1B holder had to return to India, and stay there for one year before filing for the next H!B. If in the meanwhile the processing is over, the person loses his green card.
Please let me know if this is correct for I don't know if rules have changed recently.
