Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre is organizing a free information session on ‘Sponsor your parents under family class’. The session will cover important information about the eligibility criteria, explain how to fill the application forms, the affect of sponsorship breakdown, current processing times and discuss how does this application effect the chances of getting a visitor visa?
It will be a very useful session for all who are in the process or thinking of sponsoring their parents to Canada.
All the services provided at the centre are free and are provided as part of the Immigrant and Settlement Adaptation Program funded by the Government of Canada through Citizenship and Immigration Canada

Dear Praveen
Thats a great initiative on the part of community services. However, I wonder if the people who will be attending this session will be made aware of the following facts -
1) The first stage in parental sponsorship is at 34 months currently and rising and the second step(within the country of residence) could take anywhere between 6 months to 3 years, depending on the country in which the sponsor lives.
2)On an average, the whole process takes around 4-6 years which is pretty long in the first place. It is preposterous that CIC charges you the application fees upfront and sits on your application for 3 years before giving you the go-ahead.
3)Also, there has been a disturbing trend noticed for parental applications since Dianne Finley(ex Immigration minister) announced changes to the system. Not only has the processing time for this class slowed down drastically, it continues to increase every few months
4)It is obvious that CIC is not serious about maintaining a reasonable processing time for parental sponsorship and is hoping that by the time the parents get to the stage of taking their medical exams, they either lose their health and do not pass the examinations or get frustrated by the whole process of waiting for their turn and give up before that time.
5)Also, it appears that the medical examiners have been instructed to fail applicants at the smallest sign of ill-health, and not make any allowances to the fact that seniors will not be in the top physical condition.

The purpose of these sessions is that clients understand the whole process and are in a better position to correctly complete the application forms and attach the required supporting documents.
The processing times in different immigration categories are decided by the government.
Regarding the comment about filing refugee claim, I would like to point out that with the changes coming in the refugee process, that may not be an option
