As mentioned in one of the postings by a CD, and recently heard about an acquaintance of mine, being offered a job at TCS, who is a B.Sc. from not-so-reputed university in India. I do not hold any grudges against B.Sc graduates, but B.Sc. is normally the refuge of students who are not able to get admission in BE/Medical.

When I applied at TCS, I couldn't clear the written exam as it was based on GRE format, and I hadn't prepared for GRE. I wouldn't make a claim to be the smartest guy in the world, nor would I claim the science graduate to be a dumb person, but is TCS compromising quality in a rush to get those coveted off-shore jobs? I believe there is a difference in thinking process/knowledge of an engineer v/s science graduate,

I am bit worried if this is the current trend in Indian IT sector.

I am sure their clients will realize if there is a quality problem or live with it since it came cheap. It's all about money. One wants to spend lesser and lesser and the other wants to make more and more. Hopefully, I am wrong and the quality is maintained at lower cost.

there is nothing wrong in hiring B.Sc graduates for outsourcing work.
the type of work being done these days does not require IIT graduates.
it is better to have a good, competent B.Sc graduate rather than a run of the mill pack rat eng. graduate.
just having an eng. degree doesn't guarantee any quality in IT work

I am in IT and completely agree with you.
Very few smart people are required at software architecture level.
BTW, I would say BSc qualification is no less than engg. degree. You don't need engg. graduates to write good code. People like Bill Gates do not need to finish engg. degree to become a smart guy.

Who will work if company hires only IIT grads?

Not everything can be automated. Management needs some cheap labor to put down codes. and IIT is no cheap.

Its all about Matrix these days. Just last week talking to a guy while waiting in Queue for my morning coffee at Timmie. One lady at cash register, serving single Queue of about 7-8 customers. There were about 5 brown shirts busy for customers at tiny Drive Through window. Right above the window there was a timer. Feeding live performance report to management, sitting somewhere behind the door. Its all Matrix !!!

So why did TCS/Infy go on a hiring spree in 90s in engineering colleges and creating such "difficult to crack" exams? Does it mean that they under utilise their employees capabilities?

I have no problem with science graduates working as software programmers. It just means that those companies either erred by hiring overqualified graduates or the work they do these days require less skill than what it took 10 years ago.

I am a B.Comm, MBA(Marketing) graduate and been working in IT for a quite some time now. Leave aside Canada, no one in India asked me to do Engg. to work in IT. I have a few friends who are B.A. and flourishing in IT (couple of them on H1B and internationally placed). On the other hand, I personally came across quite a dumb Engg. and MCA Graduates during my work in India.

Besides, outsourcing is all about cost saving and nothing wrong if TCS hires B.Sc.
