I have been going to a desi barbershop which is near to my place and is bit cheaper than the brandname shops. The owner has hired a barber who normally cuts my hair. He seems to be from some remote Punjab village, and I tip him after he cuts my hair. However yesterday, it seemed that at the end of the day, he had to give all his tips to owner. Do you think it is possible? Are other desi barbershops/beauty salons or restaurant owners doing the same thing? I believe the owner cannot put a claim over a waiter/server's tip.

The owner is also a cheapshot. He doesn't dip his combs in barbicide, doesn't use the "collar" and doesn't change the cloth. As I hit the shower as soon as I am done visiting that place, I don't mind such unclean practises, but now I feel like it is worth changing my barber just for ethical and sanitary reasons.

Any such other experiences to share?

Is that shop near McLaughlin & Ray Lawson?

Sometimes the server hand over the tip coins to the owner to convert into the dollar bills.

You can ask to use barbicide - it is your right.

Never risk your hygiene for a few bucks.

Please do not encourage any organization/company which does unethical practises.

you may get AIDS or other STD's from ultra-cheap chinese or desi barber-shops.
check, if all appratus were dipped in special chemical(for dis-infection) before they use it on your body.
make sure they use new blade before shaving ur backneck.
check yourself do not trust them

cheaper chinese/desi often re-use same blade:down:

I completely agree with being hygienic but loosely using statements like "you may get AIDS " is misleading- as you probably know that HIV can only be transmitted through [FYI]:-
* Unprotected sexual intercourse (either vaginal or anal) with someone who is HIV-infected.

* Unprotected oral sex with someone who is HIV-infected.
There are far fewer cases of HIV transmission attributed to oral sex than to either vaginal or anal intercourse, but oral-genital contact poses a clear risk of HIV-infection, particularly when ejaculation occurs in the mouth. This risk is increased when either partner has cuts or sores, such as those caused by sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), recent tooth-brushing, or canker sores, which can allow the virus to enter the bloodstream.

* Sharing needles or syringes with someone who is HIV-infected.

* Infection during pregnancy, childbirth, or breast-feeding (mother-to-infant transmission).

What Is HIV?
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. A member of a group of viruses called retroviruses, HIV infects human cells and uses the energy and nutrients provided by those cells to grow and reproduce.

What Is AIDS?
AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease in which the body's immune system breaks down and is unable to fight off certain infections, known as "opportunistic infections," and other illnesses that take advantage of a weakened immune system.

When a person is infected with HIV, the virus enters the body and lives and multiplies primarily in the white blood cells. These are the immune cells that normally protect us from disease. The hallmark of HIV infection is the progressive loss of a specific type of immune cell called T-helper or CD4 cells.

Thanks,
~K
