Hello all,

We may be moving to calgary in a month or so, and have no one there whom we know, or any desi friend living in the area, so don't have much knowledge about the place. Any pointers would be very helpful, like which are the places to find desis, and good areas to rent a home, (are there any particular subdivisions or apartment complexes or specific areas with more desi presence?? would sure like to know more)
also need to know about good schools (have a small daughter, will go to school in some time ).
Thankyou for your help in advance. :)

i have lived in calgary for 2 yrs. Its all work & no play there.
Its divided into 4 sides NE, NW, SE, SW. NE is full of desi people specially punjabis. u'll get everything from india here. SW is expensive, SE is junk while NW if a better place to live with access to colleges, hospitals, etc.

Thankyou MGupta,

I'm glad atleast someone responded ..:)
As far as moving to calgary is concerned, we're not moving there out of our own volition, have got a job there which demands moving to calgary, so not much concerned regarding the job scenario there.
I do need pointers on areas to live, which has good desi presence, and also has good connectivity by public transport. (workplace will be in downtown calgary)
Also what kind of rent I'm I looking at paying ?
I have a small daughter, will it be easy or difficult for us to make desi friends with children her age (2~3) yrs ???

Thanks a bunch, I spoke too soon, while thanking Mgupta for being the only person who responded, it seems, ;)
Anyway, appreciate, your info, so if I choose to live in NW, are there any desi families living in the area ?? I would be renting so what kind of rent will I be paying ??

Can anyone tell me if a salary of approx 92,000 CAD is a decent enough salary for a family of 3 in calgary, what kind of saving am I looking at (just a ballpark ) after housing (rent), transportation and taxes ?? Just needed an idea from the forum members.
Can I possibly rent a 1 bedroom apt in the beginning even though I have a 2 yr old daughter, or are there any laws prohibiting that ??Thanks.
Also, do we get options of Indian channels in the cable ? Please advise.

$92k is a decent enough salary though $100k+ is very common in Calgary among professionals in engineering, software etc.
Unless you are looking for a basement, 1br is not an issue.
There is a significant indian population in Calgary, so don't have to worry about grocery, temple, indian channels etc.
Your saving depends on your life style in general. Say $1500 for rent, 30% taxes, you may be able to save some decent money.
