In Canada, does the traffic light change from red to green if there is an ambulance coming with lights on? I have never observed myself. Is there some sort of detector/sensor that would allow the traffic light to change colour when an ambulance is approaching?

It does not change it by itself, but all emergencies services has a kind of functionalities in their vehcile where they can change the lights from Red to Green.

I dont know about the ability to change the lights - but they already have right of way in any direction - so I dont think they will waste time with changing traffic lights - will just pass through.

What was the purpose of the query?

I know in Peel, if the road is blocked, they turn the lights into green. I have onserved it couple of times.

If you are on intersection such Hurontario Ontario and Dundas, emergency vechiles will never get the right of way. It is 2 lane narrow interection.

Some of us are trying to see if we can use a system to get the ambulances moving in an emergency instead of stuck in red light. I think I have seen in US where there is a flickering light near to the traffic light indicating emergency vehciles are on the way so that other vehicles give the right of way. Do the ambulance drivers in Canada have the cotnrol to change the light from red to green? That would be misused in India.

As I have observed the ambulances just zoom thru the red light while all the traffic come to a stop. But would the traffic light have some sensor to change red to green for ambulance / fire engine?

Police/Fire/Ambulance vehicles do NOT have a system to turn red light green.
They have a device that can delay the green light (keep green on longer)
Even transit buses have that.
Police/Fire/Ambulance have right of way so they do not need to turn light green to cross and intersection

As Desi #1 mentioned above, it is in Peel Region. I've seen it myself, around Dixie & Eglington. I don't think it's there in Toronto.

A while back, I had read on one of the forums on how to make a traffic signal preemption receiver. If I find the site, I'll post it here. Just be carefully as not to get caught.

Meanwhile, check this link -> http://www.themirt.com/
