Hi CDs,
We are new to this forum. Postdoc position in both places (hou&Toronto). We will move there in Oct and have a Nissan Altima (2004) bought for USD 8500 last year. Still have $4800 balance. We are moving there with temp work emp category. I want to do the documentations myself I want to drive from here to Toronto.
1. Is my decision to bring this car there good? The car is in excellent condition.
2. I dont want to spend $2000 to ship it so want to drive through the borders. Is it ok if i do so?
3.Can we transfer this loan there?
Any advices reg documentation or in General.
Thanks in Advance.

We will find a way or we will make one
thanks
You can't import the car to the different country if it has Lien on it (in your case your lender).
If you are on a temporary status in canada its not worth to import anyways.
You are allowed to drive on a US License plates for upto 6 months (ofcouse with US insurance as well) before 6 months done take another trip to buffalo and you will be entitled to drive for another 6 months.

didnt know thanks. We will close this debt. Our US visa (J1) will be expired and our intention is to then apply for Canadian PR. in this case its better to finish the RIV formalities right?
U can get a 2004 Altima for a similar price in canada.
Check http://www.autotrader.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK
Importing such a old car from usa is not recommended..
Also u will need to have free and clear title to import the car, which means u have to pay off the loan.
U need to first make sure if ur make and model is eligible for imports from the canada border website.. After that u will have pay taxes and import duties and also spend money to put day light running on ur car.
All this will end up costing ur over 1000$
Best as suggested by someone else u continue to drive on ur US plates in canada as long as u can until u get cited and then sell the car in US and buy a new car in canada.
BTW make sure u and ur wife have a US drivers license. getting canadian license much more difficult than US drivers license but US drivers license is easily exchanged for canadian drivers license
Thanks. In this case, since we wont have USA visa once we enter Canada its better to sell here I think so. I am always lazy to sell so lots of work for me
