Sachin must be playing for his records and not for the team's victory, which is only incidental.
That is why his die hard fans also pull out "records" to justify his inclusion, even at 40 or even when he will be 60.
True the sanskrit saying "Yatha Raja, Thatha Praja".

Funny how we remember our cricket ..... please tell me ONE test match that Patil played under pressure and India won .... just ONE will do .........
Name a better batsman currently in India..ok even in the past. Just put the name that comes first in your mind. If he is any other than Sachin, just give a brief why you think he is better than Sachin..you will find the answer yourself. Now compare any other sportsman in India, who comes first in your mind and then compare his/her facts and figures and you will find your answer why Sachin is still the best....
Remember Laxman, Dravid or Dhoni guide 8,9 and 10 players and take the team to a decent total or victory. But Sachin befitting his stature and talent has hardly ever done that. May be he thinks that if he had to bat with the tail his batting may get spoilt.
May be Sachin bats high up in the order. But in this long career of 20 years his permanent place ensured and cushioned by the selectors, he has done that only a very few times. Remember that 136 against Pakistan at Chennai. If only he had cared to stay a few more overs, which he could have and not hit a skier, India would have won the match and the test series.
A player who starts his career as a Number Eleven batsman, but ends as a successful opening batsman and all rounder, facing fiercest fast bowlers is much better than a batsman who is forever 2 down batsman, talented, but takes his place for granted and scores his runs as per his whims and fancies and never bother about his team's requirement.
For those who believe cricket is mere numbers and statistics Sachin may be the greatest. For those who think that cricket is more than that, Sachin will be found sadly wanting and there are others who are much greater.

Look what they did to Dravid, are doing to Laxman and now want to take piece of Sachin. Again just because Sachin is earning Millions and some one named Sadgopan Ramesh or something is not in the team, people are getting jealous under the pretext of India, indian team etc etc...They don't realize that they don't have what it takes to be on the top but will do everything in their little might to pull the top one down...It is good that Sachin is not responding to every tom, dick n harry. He had been thru such storms before. He is keeping his cool and moving forward...Kutton ke bhonkane se hathi apni chal nahi badlta he...(I know the response to this one will be Sachin is like Hathi in the team ).
So what you are saying is Dravd is better than Sachin? Dhoni is better than Sachin? Laxman is better than Sachin? As a batsman? as a player?....Sachin never demanded he wanted to be captain..he knows his talents, limits and skills.

"Joker, Kicked out of Tamil Nadu team, ran away from Assam" etc. etc. Long time Ramesh quit serious cricket, but was sought after by other states for his experience. Ramesh is very well known in Tamil Nadu and not "player named Sadagopan Ramesh or something".
20 centuries in 116 matches is not a bad average. One in less than 6 matches.
Ramesh had good talent both in batting and even bowling, with 5 wicket haul twice in ODIs. He was a very good close in fielder and was responsible for Harbhajan getting a hat-trick, which won the test match for India against Steve Waugh's Aussies in Chennai.
We cannot better language from the "devotees" of God of Cricket. Otherwise the story of Indian cricket would have been much better.
Your God continuing with his "good work" by scoring 6 runs and getting out at Dakka a batsman's paradise, the ball hardly raising above knee level at this venue. He is over the hills and needs to be dropped.
