Sachin Tendulkar gets to yet another century but India end up on the losing side - How many times have we seen that? Even in this World Cup, the batting legend went past 100 on two occasions but neither facilitated an Indian win. However, it is not the fault of the great cricketer that India ended up on the losing side yet again.

While there would be the Tendulkar bashers and critics who say that India lose a match whenever Sachin scores a century, the statistics prove otherwise. Of the 48 ODI centuries that Tendulkar has scored so far, only 13 such three-figure scores have ended up in a losing cause for India, while in 33 matches, where the batting maestro has gone past 100, India have emerged victors. One match against England in July 2002 saw a Sachin ton yield no result while the recently concluded match against the same side resulted in a tied game.

Here's a look at Sachin's ODI hundreds in losing causes:

Runs 4s 6s Strike Rate Against
137 8 5 100.00 Sri Lanka
100 9 1 90.09 Pakistan
110 5 1 79.71 Sri Lanka
143 9 5 109.16 Australia
101 3 1 72.14 Sri Lanka
146 15 2 95.42 Zimbabwe
101 9 0 78.29 South Africa
141 17 1 104.44 Pakistan
123 12 2 94.61 Pakistan
100 10 1 88.49 Pakistan
141* 13 5 95.27 West Indies
175 19 4 124.11 Australia
111 8 3 109.90 South Africa

From the above list we all know what happened in Sharjah against Australia when he scored 143. Took us to the final and scored another century to win the final. And the 175 again. Heck it's a team game and proves that even 175 cannot win a match.

Now that the statistics prove Sachin's hundreds have yielded more wins than losses for India, let us see what the maestro has done for India's cause when he has gone past 50 but not a ton.

Out of the 93 times Sachin Tendulkar has scored a fifty, India have secured 56 wins while ending up on the losing side 35 times. Two games yielded no results. Digging deeper, India has won 28 times whenever Sachin has scored between 70 to 99.

The next question that will come up on peoples' minds is "Who has scored the maximum number of tons in winning causes for their respective teams?" Once again, Tendulkar's critics will have their mouths tightly shut because the master tops the chart with most number of tons resulting in a team's win. He also has stayed unbeaten the most number of times while leading a team's win.

Here is the list:

Player Country Hundreds Not-outs Highest
Sachin Tendulkar India 33 13 200*
Sanath Jayasuriya Sri Lanka 24 5 189
Ricky Ponting Australia 25 8 145
Sourav Ganguly India 18 10 183
Brian Lara West Indies 16 3 169
Adam Gilchrist Australia 16 1 172
Desmond Haynes West Indies 16 10 152*
Saeed Anwar Pakistan 16 6 194
Mark Waugh Australia 15 4 173
Herschelle Gibbs South Africa 15 1 175

To add to all these, Sachin Tendulkar has the most number of 'Man of the Match' and 'Man of the series' awards than any other cricketer in ODIs - evidence to the fact that Tendulkar is a major contributor in Indian wins.

To conclude, Sachin's contribution to the game and to India, regardless of what people say, is undoubted and he has more often than not provided joy than agony to the cricket fan. The South Africa match was another instance of the legend putting up his hand and giving his all to the team while the others failed, but can Tendulkar be blamed for his teammates not performing?

People always forget the '90s and '00s where the team was pathetic and used to ride on one man's shoulders.

Just try to enjoy Sachin bat while he lasts.

Good job ramesh0634 for substantiating that we hardly have anyone else of Sachin's calibre in the team. Recent lack of form notwithstanding.

I always say that Stats speak louder than words.

Sachin's critics, please start scratching your head now.

"out of billion population one veteran player is struggling a bit to make historical record".

OK we will keep waiting for him to make the record. Meanwhile, let the other ten think that there are only 10 players in the team and perform to make India win the games.

But unfortunately for this Indian team or any other team it will not work like that. The message that negligent or deliberate non-performance can be condoned will spread fast and all others would also claim a place in the playing XI.

Out of all the 50 and 100s Sachin has scored in ODI, it will be interesting to know how many of them he has scored, when India were chasing totals. How many times was he not out and won the match? That is where the real character of a batsman is displayed, not mere records

We are not finding scapegoats in Sachin. Let him buy a dozen more BMWs and scorch the roads of Mumbai. We are forever are going to remain "common people" or whatever you wish to call. Playing Sachin when he is 40 and non-performing or when he is 80 and still non-performing is only the symptom. The disease is that the individuals are more important than the team, the society or the country is the rot that is set in the system, not only in cricket but everywhere.

Which other 10s are talking about? they all need rest..instead of calling them rest 10, they should be called as rusted 10. They could not even stand few minutes in the crease and you are counting on them to win the game..now lets say Sachin is gone because of your far cries..who are you looking at to bring in? Vengsarkar? There is no run making machine in the line waiting for Sachin to get retired. If there would have been, why wud mgmt send Dravid and Laxman to Australia? There is no one out there...so blame Sachin..what a shame..such a great player born in India but it is shame that some in India look towards Viv Richards and other foreigners.....Holi he thoda mooh pe kala laga ke aao.

When Dravid and Saurav were brought into the team in the mid 90s, then also people were not sure whether they would be as good as the dropped players. The way Viv at his best (without helmet those days) won matches for WI is no comparison. Sachin has hardly every done except for the Sharjah 143 against Aussies in the mid 90s. Sachin is the child of the satellite channels which birth in India coincided with his debut in 1989. His career would have been resurrected at least half a dozen times to give it an additional 10 years, literally to "boost" the ad agencies, the satellite channels themselves, live telecast rights for the Board and along with that the retired life as administrators for many cricketers who are sycophants and beneficiaries and hence would not dare to drop him. As long he has their "catering service" he can be playing even when 80. We are all cheating ourselves when we speak about his so called "records", because no other cricketer in India has got that additional 10 years.
At least on one occasion remember him travelling with the team in the home series having a tennis elbow. When the team was fumbling under Saurav, there should have been replacement for Sachin and he should have sat at Mumbai to watch the matches from his TV. But that was not the case. He travelled with the team all over India not playing a single match, ensuring no other player took his place. No other test cricketer has ever been allowed such a luxury. At the beginning of each match the media would say Sachin would play, but he would not and the entire series of 5 tests went like that. There were reports that Saurav himself lost his patience once during the series to call him "passenger", only to lose his post as captain soon after.

There was this case in the England team when Boycott got dropped after scoring a big hundred, but so slowly that the team could not win. He was dropped for the next test. Can such a thing ever happen against Sachin? If we closely study the recent bad performances by India in test series, we can see a definite pattern. The senior player scores a 50, 60 or 70 befitting their mid 30 age and then for the next 2 or 3 innings there is total failure as batsmen and for their team' cause. Again they would score a 50 or 60, to confuse the selectors. Believe that this trend started with Sachin and had caught on to other senior players. The team does not win by such individual "performances", but only can fill record books to nobody else's benefit. There were many instances in the recent tests that the discerning viewer would have thought if only the 'seniors" hung on for half a session the team would have drawn the match, if not won.

If at all anything is to be ashamed about, it is the culture that the individual is bigger than the team or even the game of cricket.

Sachin Tendulkar

Test Matches:

Overall: Matches: 188 Average: 55.44 100s: 51.

In India: Matches: 82 Average: 56.37 100s: 22
Away: Matches: 106 Average: 54.74 100s: 29

In Won Matches: Matches: 63 Average: 66.59 100s: 20
In Lost Matches: Matches: 54 Average: 37.65 100s: 11
In Drawn Matches: Matches: 71 Average: 66.12 100s: 20
In Won & Drawn: Matches: 134 Average: 66.35 100s: 40

This poor guy was not able to win or draw just 54 matches in his career of 188 matches that is 28% percent and getting criticized :)

No matter how you measure him, he would be still great.
