Hi all,

One of my friend a Canadian Citizen got a very good offer in US (150K+ offer).

However his job involves a lot of travel across US cities.

He is planning to keep in wife and kids in Canada and make her claim benefits as a Single mom.

Is that possible?

I know its very common for people claim single mother benefits while spouses work in the middle east and pay zero tax to Canadian government.

What precautions should be taken to do this legally

No, it's not possible, as long as both of them are married, at least on paper.

Your friend being a Canadian, will still need to file Canadian taxes and pay tax on the US income, after he's paid the US taxes. Although he'll get credit for the US taxes paid. Unless off course he files for NR status.

If the "single mom" is not working, then your friend can claim the spousal amount

So he got a good 150+k offer but still looking for ways to earn further benefits and evade taxes.

A suggestion - ask your friend to divorce his wife and be a visitor. That way she will be single mom and he can still declare a withholding in US to evade some more.
what ? did I say anything wrong ...why? ..the proposal is full of benefits , an easy mooch to both the governments. That is what the target isnt it ? . Do it , man ! taint the desi reputation ! !

Was he some kind of a shopkeeper in India before immigrating ?

And then claim the child alimony from husband as well.... Not sure what the real intent is here, but asking such question on open forum instead of calling CPA, lawyer, CRA etc is not making sense.
San Hugo,
It is not only Desi mentality I think there may be tonnes of people from all types of communities who could be exploiting this loophole. When it comes to money race ,religion, community, nationality nothing matters..sabase bada rupaiyah...Some are doing out of majburi some just to earn extra income, why not...whereas genuine taxpayers who abide by the law are getting screwed...

People earning 30k per year in family income and doing it can be somehow understood and nodded to non-desis included, but after getting 150k offer and even thinking of scratching some more by looping hands into holes is redonkulous.... absolutely redonkulous !!
