Air Alitalia via Rome to Dubai from Toronto-transit visa needed

Any idea if i travel from Toronto with air Alitalia as it is cheapest option via rome and than emirates to Dubai,do i (indian) need a transit visa for transiting at Rome??

Not Required if you are not going outside of airport . How many hours of your stay there in Rom ?

Permanent Residents do not need transit visa for Shengen countries.

If you are a Canadian P.R., then they will let you stay in the airport transit lounge. They do not charge you anything or ask for a transit visa.

Also, if you are staying longer, you can get a SCHENGEN VISA which will cost you 60 Euros. It is good for 90 days. You can get that visa here in Canada at the ITALIAN embassy. The forms and the instructions are on the web.

And if you have this visa, you can skip out of the airport for a tour of the city and a pizza and a drink. There are tour operators who will take you for a guided tour of Three Hours for about 60 Euros. There are lockers in the airport to leave your hand bags, if you do not want to lug them.

Regardless of your nationality , you DO NOT need a schengen visa if you are transiting through only ONE schengen country .

If your trip involves 2 schengen countries say Rome - Frankfurt then you would need one.
