I know I could get the information on the internet but wish to take the desi perspective on booking a return flight ..

a. When to book : How much time before is the best time to book a flight ? I d read some where that booking it highly in advance also is not cheaper ... some where b/w 6 to 12 weeks in advance is perhaps when you might get the best deal ..Is that correct ?

b. How to book : These days on-line booking removes the middleman .. I know of CheapoAir and FlyFar.ca .. Are there any other websites that you have had a good experience with and wish to recommend ?

c. How to get best seats : I know that for an extra charge the Airlines give you access to a tool which allows you to select your seats in advance ..first come first served basis and 24 hours before the flight the tool is available to all to choose and print their boarding pass as well ... I guess my q is .. which seats in economy class give you the maximum legroom and is that in some way decided by the aircraft you are on ? Also is it better to have seat in the front , middle or rear of the aircraft ..My guess is front since business class is in the front ..

The following qs are related to return flights DEL- YYZ for seniors ( my parents are visiting in May and I wish to book a return flight for them May- Nov)

d. Are there any direct flights - I d heard of Jet Airways / Air India but not sure ? Have never travelled Jet Airways but have heard good about it ..Had a pleasant experience flying Air India .

e. I wished them to get maximum legroom in an economy flight ..How to achieve this ?

As Air India is no longer operating YYZ , Jet is a good option for parents if coming from Delhi. It has a short stop over at Brussel, small airport and all desi community in flight with desi flight attendants. Parents might feel more comfortable.

Emirates, Etihad and BA are anytime better flights than Jet but do check connection time, terminal changes etc before deciding as your parents will be travelling.

Thanks , I wish to avoid Heathrow as a transit point though I would be requesting for wheel chair assistance to avoid them any trouble in reaching the correct gates in time.

Incidentally I also came across a website Seatguru which tells you the seats lay out per the Airlines and the aircraft type ..Appears that exit rows have more legroom than the rest ...

Will check out Jet .

Exit rows have more legroom, but must meet certain requirements to be eligible for the exit row seats.

For US based flights, the requirements are English language, ability to lift or move the exit door, understand instructions and ability/willingness to assist other passengers and follow instructions.

Other airlines may have specific requirements.

This row, especially the middle section, tend to be reserved for passengers with children who need bassinets.

I will briefly touch your points one at a time.. but will not be a complete answer. I will take a whole day to do that.

a) Yes. Close to it.

b) Always through an agent. They will help correct mistakes..

c) They normally divide the classes with a wall and a curtain. The division is called a BULKHEAD. On to it they hang a basket for the babies, who normally pay a 10% fare. (No more free bees) hence these seats get allocated to ones with babies. It has a lot of leg room. So, most of us are out of luck.
Also the aisle seats will provide a little swing room, but it is a trip hazard. The wider the body location of the plane the wider the seats. (Generally) It tapers down towards the tail. In a few cases, they remove a seat at the rear end and the seats have a little extra wiggle room. That is why see the seating arrangement on the flight. They do provide the type of plane and the seats also. (Some times they do switch the planes!!)

d) Today I do find DIRECT FLIGHTS. The so called direct flights, also stops over for re-fuelling in some cases and they shuffle you out of the plane, that includes the wheel chair candidates also.

So, many a times we always look for a companion for our elderly Parents-Grands and kids too. If you can find a wheel chair traveller who is heading to the same destination and your traveller is seeking a companion, it is easy to hit it off with them and if the language also happens to be the same, then, it will be a bonus. Just a thought. Currently, we do see a lot of elderly people who travel and are seeking a comnpanion. See if the airline will help at the check ins to pair them off at the very last minute. It will help them both. Some air lines do that. Also, some wheel chair passengers are fussy and they do not want help, nor help others. So, it is not always a done deal.

Some of the big huge monsters that fly into India are able to stop through the air ports where they can bunker for cheap, middle east especially, and I found it a pleasure to fly with the BIG BIRDS and it is so smooth, all I heard was a whisper. Leg room, head room and elbow room etc., are a great feature to enjoy and a Hundred or so bucks FOR A RETURN TRIP is nothiing extra to cry about. If you ever get a chance, do take the A380 series or the Dreamliner series or the 797 that is just now opened up its runs.

I do not know how to use them, but they are there. If you know anyone who is working for them, then, you can always get a flight out of town on that day.

CONSOLIDATORS : Who are they? : http://www.airlineconsolidator.com/aboutus.html

There is no hard and fast rules, but airlines begin releasing their discount fares three and a half months before a flight departs. If you are looking for the best discounted seats, start shopping early. Although the airline might not release all the discounted seats at once, if you start checking prices this far out, you will be much more likely to see that discounted fare you are looking for and grab it when you do. Prices inch up starting about one month before departure, and begin to climb more steeply starting 14 days before departure.
