Hello all,
I'll be arriving in Winnipeg in Dec this year from India as a student. I was wondering which of the two options is more convenient, given the extreme weather conditions prevailing at that time:
1. Stay at the college campus living hostel for first 4 months (I will still be required to walk about 300-400 metres to attend my classes.) Excuse my naivete, but I'm not sure if even walking is an option in that kind of weather??!!
2. Stay outside the college campus, say about 3-4 km, and use public transport to attend classes.
Note: I do not have a driving license and have no experience driving a car.
Thanks for taking time to reply to this!

In winnipeg you can use 'skywalk' in downtown to move around during winter. skywalk is basically covered bridges attaching various buildings which takes you from place a to place b through malls, shops and lifted corridors within or outside buildings. Same as In toronto there is underground tunnel called 'path' spread throughout the downtown.
The public transit in wp is only bus, no trams, no underground subway.
I spent last winter in Winnipeg , sent by office, It is freaking cold, I must admit. Plenty of students and we know that where there is student there is a way.
Enjoy! The summers will be ultra nice.
But the Op is going to study in the univetsity and the university is in the outskirts.
Even then, the cold will not be such a big deal but you may face depression if you are keen on saving / earning money while studying.
I would suggest socializing, learing the culture of the whites, having harmless parties etc...

Thanks all! You guyz are awesome. Appreciate everyone's inputs here. Well, I never mentioned where I'm going to study. I'm going to the Red River College, which is in the Exchange Business District.
So san-hugo, do you know if the 'skywalks' are present in this part of the town? It'd be a great relief if they are! ;-)
Ok...I looked up skywalks in Winnipeg on the Net and apparently there are none in the Exchange Business District or at least where the college campus is located. Anyways, thanks for all the help, and any (new) insights on how to manage the daily commute are welcome!!
GreatWhiteNorth: Guess it is good enough ... just take a dip if you are determined. You will learn lot of things only through first hand experience.
