I have observed that our own neighbours in the sub continent hate us most. Pakistanis, Sri Lankans (including some Tamils from Sri Lanka) and Bangladeshis. They are chummy with whites, but the attitude changes as soon as they see an Indian. I have seen this number of times. Probably due to the hatred preached in their countries against India. After all, we have a booming economy and a very strong defence as compared to these countries. Jealousy has no limit, I guess.
My personal experience has been contrary to what you have oberved.

Mee too have totally oposite experience!! At work usually you get people from all countries and quite often immigrants look for other immigrants for help/friendship etc.
In that respect even chinese also love to talk to desis as compare to goras (by the way desi doesn't mean only Indian, it is for all south asians)
Interestingly we quite often touch issues of war with pakistanies and chinese and it comes to very intresting conclusions.
All immigrants are facing similar problems so why hate each-other?

A Proud Indian Canadian
I have always found that out of our own country, south asians seem to come closer to each other and make an extra effort to mingle. And in fact the discussions between them are more intelligent than what desi in Ottawa's post might suggest. This could be due to two reasons - firstly, people who go out to other countries, especially on work permits etc. are professionals and therefore they do not like the unnecessary hatred created for each other by the politicians of our countries, and secondly, in a south asian, they find someone like them and so the inherent desire to make friends with someone of your own kind becomes stronger in a foreign land.
Infact, the only part time job that I have is a business run by a Pakistani and I have now been working for him for almost 8-9 months with friendship growing stronger as the months pass by.

DIO can you be more specific.... unlike pragmatic posts above I have an inclination to agree with you (partially)... They may be friendly, they may have sweet words for you..but remember they are guided by some other principles and some other motives...Chinese are an exception... They just dont care..they are interested in their work and nothing else. But when it comes to other S.Asians its a whole new ball game.
BL, I beg to differ but you have put a pragmatic spin to your stamenet when you said that "interesting" conclusions are reached when you talk with Pakistanis abt war
I quite vividly remember the 1999 Kargil war...how my attitudes towards the Pakistanis in the department changed...and they have remained the same all through that time. Its despicable, I agree, but lets adopt the US policy here.... You better not take any chances...DIO one more reason for their cribbing..you have aptly stated..a booming economy back home...most of the jobs are being created in India..be it BPO/other IT services/Biotech etc. Where does that leave the other nations ? I dont see Bangladesh coming in the picture anywhere..except maybe developing a gas field ....Even they wey log nahkre kar rahein hain... But you see money talks.... India bypasses them and goes to Myanmar directly...and that increases the sense of jealousy.....
No need to mention abt Pakistani's... Its very hard to have a conversation with a Pakistani (no matter where he / she is or how much he / she is a liberal )..Because the conversation will end up with the K-word and terrorism
Just by coming here ppl dont change their attutudes. In fact the "racism" becomes more subtle. Take the example in UK.... Indians are now very aggressive in avoiding the term "Asians" attached to them..so as to differentiate themselves from Pakistanis and Bangladeshi's..who are getting a different kind of publicity. Nothing as such has happened here in Canada. That's cos the Canadian Govt doesnt give us much leeway in expressing such feelings...but the implicit resentment against each other is there..very much there and alive. NO harm admitting it... Just think of them as a different class of ppl and you have to stay with them (mutually exclusive events in Math theory).. Let them lead their own lives and you lead your own lives. This is what is being done in the UK..Leicester vs Bradford for example...SO much so that some British socilogists have expressed "concern" abt this lack of interaction between them
Srilankans are different. It depends on whom u talk to. Tamils or Sinhalese.
Nepalis...never met any in Canada..but here in the USA they are quite cool
Ppl from Maldives.... again never met any
From Afghanistan....well again unless they are Pashtun's (the Taleban) you know you have met real friends....and they share a common hatred for Pakistanis !
