Dear CD's,
Yesterday one of my friends came to me with a question.
His daughter (he is widowed) is doing her 12th. std. in an international school. It seems that she is very impressed with Canadian history that she wants to do her undergraduate study (in any branch of Engineering) in Canada. It seemed that they were thinking that they will get scholarships.
My reply was that Canada was a very costly place to do UG course for the reason that scholarships were limited and as an international student she would have to pay 3 X than that charged for a PR or immigrant. At the end of the course, then they would be giving her (say) a 2 year work permit. Jobs are hard to come by for international students and she will be forced to do a labour job. After 1 year and cooked up IT returns, then she would be able to apply for PR which she can get in another 2years. And then the 4 year wait for citizenship. It does not seem worth it.
I suggested that they directly seek admission to USA where the job oppertunities are more and where the scholarships are more too. USA is more friendly and benefical towards international students too. They were not interested in USA (but then they are also telling that they can only spend limited money).
I further offered them the advice that they can study in Germany where there is no tution fee and hence expenses will be less. They donot prefer Germany as Germany does not offer them PR after graduation and students are expected to leave (in ideal cases).
I am meeting them next week to discuss further.
Is there any information that any CD can add on to this?

that it will take TWO good years to learn German Language,
Learnt from people that many universities teach in English and that it is not that difficult to communicate in Germany (might be in certain areas) with just English knowledge.
The best part is after her graduation from Germany and getting her PR. into Canada will be lot easier as they look for people with her background here in Industries with German Links,
Problem is Canada looks for 1 year experince for application of PR. How are the German immigration laws like? Are you expected to return back to your home country, once the education is over or will you be given certain years to look for work or can you stay back in Germany if you find a job immediately upon graduation.

Four+ years of engineering in Canada will set them back substantially (150,000+). It would be worthwhile to complete UG engineering in India and move to Canada/US for masters. Scholarships are not easy for foreign students in undergraduate programs.
Btw, the US is now contemplating a six year student work visa for foreign undergraduates+graduates from STEM fields in US colleges. As it is, US is nowadays somewhat liberal in giving student visas.
This latest development, should it come to fruition, would be a game changer and give other countries competing to offer higher education services, a run for their money.
