Can anybody give advice! Is it possible for an international student ( on study visa) to get married to another international student( on study visa) in Canada and get the spouse visa for anyone? Is it necessary that the marriage has to be in our own country only. If it is possible, which organisation has to be approached. Please advice on this.

It is possible if all you want is to have one of you on a student visa here and the other as the accompanying spouse.

Dear Massood ji,

I scanned through all the threads in this section and found this one to be most relevant to my case. I also hope to benefit from your expert guidance, the way you have been doing for so many people on this group.

Me and my fiancee have together applied to selected Canadian Univs for the Fall 2004 session. Based on several factors (repute, location etc) we have chosen Univ of Toronto as the Univ for our higher studies. I have already got an Admit from Rotman, UoT for its Fall 2004 MBA, while my fiancee is expecting her response from UoT soon for her graduate studies. We both are IIT-Delhi graduates. Due to the deadline limitations and personal reasons, we would be applying for our respective study permits in New Delhi.

Questions:
1. Does it affect our status/visas (legally) if we get married in India, after getting our student permits, but before landing up in Canada?

2. The other option is to get married in Canada (registered) aftering landing up in the School. How does our marriage in Canada as students affect our legal status/visa (immigration point of view)?

2. What is a [spouse visa]? Is it something that one needs to apply additionally after getting married? If yes, then, can one of us have an additional [spouse visa] in addition to retaining his/her [student visa]? We both definitely like to continue as students even after marriage till the completion of our courses.

3. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this setup (student visa + spouse visa) if any?

3. We wish to apply for our PR soon after starting our studies in Canada. What is the best path for us - marry first and then apply (one or both?) OR apply first and then marry anytime?

Its my sincere request to you to please explain a bit the legalities/reasons as you reply, since so much information about PR on these threads has left me confused.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Eagerly waiting for your advice,

Ateet,

Sorry, my post doesn't have anything to do with your immigration questions. But ...

Once you are in Canada, check out IIT Alumni Canada Chapter http://www.iitalumnicanada.com They have IFI program helping IIT Alumni who are new immigrants/students in the country.

Other IITD Alumni including myself will also be able to extend help as much as possible. I know at least one other recent IIT graduate 2003 who is enrolled at UofT and benefiting from IFI program.

Dear AnilKG,

We were actually looking for something like this. The website looks very good. Thanks for the link. I assume that I can get the email contacts of the members ONLY after I join the group. Please suggest if I can register right now or it's mandatory to be in Canada before actually joining the group.

Thanks again,
Ateet

1. Does it affect our status/visas (legally) if we get married in India, after getting our student permits, but before landing up in Canada?

- NO

2. The other option is to get married in Canada (registered) aftering landing up in the School. How does our marriage in Canada as students affect our legal status/visa (immigration point of view)?

- DOESN'T AFFECT ANYTHING. YOU CAN GET MARRIED IN CANADA.

2. What is a [spouse visa]? Is it something that one needs to apply additionally after getting married? If yes, then, can one of us have an additional [spouse visa] in addition to retaining his/her [student visa]? We both definitely like to continue as students even after marriage till the completion of our courses.

- SPOUSE VISA IS FOR NON-STUDENT SPOUSE ACCOMPANYING THE STUDENT SPOUSE. HE/SHE MAY BE ALLOWED TO WORK. SINCE BOTH OF YOU WILL BE STUDENT, YOU'LL BOTH BE ON STUDY PERMITS. THIS WON'T APPLY TO YOU.

3. What is the advantage/disadvantage of this setup (student visa + spouse visa) if any?

- NON-STUDENT SPOUSE CAN WORK.

3. We wish to apply for our PR soon after starting our studies in Canada. What is the best path for us - marry first and then apply (one or both?) OR apply first and then marry anytime?

- BEST OPTION: GET MARRIED FIRST AND THEN APPLY FOR PR.
