My English grammar sucks, and it doesn't reflect well in my professional life. As a kid, I found English grammar classes to be very boring. So, I never paid attention to formal rules of grammar. However, I can instinctively construct sentences (learnt through repetitive usage) without consciously invoking formal rules of grammar and can put my point across.
When I post on CD or other boards, I can rarely post messages in one go without using the edit button for making the inevitable corrections. Even then, I keep coming across errors upon subsequent reading. And this is only for the errors that I could/can catch, as I do not know how many more mistakes just seep through.
How can I improve my grammar? Is there any software that can track errors in English grammar? MS-Word doesn't catch all grammatical errors.
I am exactly in the same situation but I feel that whatever grammer that I know is enough to get me by.
However, it looks like you are a little worse than me and I never generally check my message before posting on CD. Once I post I have seen typo's and gramatical mistakes (but then I can identify the gramatical mistakes).
I have in my house 2 nephews and when they read English grammer (small children), I had actually told them to teach me (like noun, pro noun, adjective etc..) but then I have no time to learn now (I reach home at 9 pm when they are almost finished with their studies).
My knowledge in English was got by reading "Enid Blyton's" stories like Famous Five, Secret Seven and Lady Bird books.
What I can suggest is that you get a book of Wern & Martin to learn Grammer basics and if you think that you want to improved your written english, may be read a lot of news papers. One time for reading the news and the next time for understanding how they have framed the sentence, gramatically. Over a period of time, you will start writing well.
Practice it in CD (Not by writing crap though) but by answering or puting forth your points of view. See the gramatically well done postings of FP, JRF, Fido, FH and the like and get inspirations from that.
Just to give you an example, my first need to write an office mail was in 1997. I spent the whole day, not able to get any ideas. Then I had access to an Englishman's office mail. It was so nicely worded. I copied the same style. Then all the office mails that I did was based on his style. In Saudi, I worked under a draftsman who was able to give me the gist of what he wanted in the mail and I framed it and got it approved by him. I wrote around 50 mails for him in 2.5 years. Then I came to Canada. Again my boss (an Italian) had no time to frame emails and I wrote around 100's of emails on his behalf. When I came to India in 2011, my CEO (Himself a great writer of emails) was so pleased with the points that I raised on the emails and was also pleased with its sharpness, gramatical correctness that when the CFO wanted to give a special 10 % raise to one indivdual in the office (out of 20), I was choosenm partly because of talent in writing e-mails.

I think Dimple2001 is the best writer on this board, followed by Adam Thorat and Blue Lobster.
Yeah. I agree. Dimple's father is a professor and so no guessing where his skills came from.

Mine sucks too... actually badly sucks but that should not affect your confidence level as ong s someone can understand what ur saying ....
when i landed in canada i only knew " I M LOOKING FOR JOB "
lot of TV' s and internet has helped me improve little , the key to getting better is actually speaking it with someone. You can take all the class you like, but if you don't practice what you learn it will never be the best.
salut to you not many people openly admit that they have bad english skill. So just keep trying to make conversation and it will begin to be clearer and you will definitely learn the differences between words like do and does.
btw: i'm still sucks after so many years but not shy to stand in front of crowd with whatever strength i have
