Most of us on this forum have noticed that many of us (including me ofcourse), make mistakes while framing sentences in English language like:

wrong spelling
incorrect grammer
improper formation of sentences
or simply such sentences which are a combination of two or three sentences put into one long one.

Now I do realise that similar things happen when we write or speak our native language too, and most human beings are not very good at communicating in words, written or spoken. However, having come to Canada (or planning to come to Canada), improving our language skills becomes very important, more so because North America is a place where expression of thoughts is done in a much refined and better manner than in other parts of the world.

I do not approve of those persons who catergorically denounce a person by saying that his/her English is pathetic, but that brings me to a point worth giving a thought. Since this forum is to help each other, should we all (not any particular group) help each other to refine their expression and remove their shortcomings or rectify their mistakes by pointing out specific words/sentences/phrases etc. and suggesting the correct or better expression/spelling/word? In my view, it can be done by anyone who sees a gross mistake (since small ones are not worth pointing, unless they are repeated time and again) in a friendly manner, and the person being advised should take it as an advice or help rather than as a personal attack.

Such a help can go a long way in improving our language and help us settle in Canada much better than trying to continue our lives without improving our expression and English language.

What do you say guys?

Chandresh

That is a VERY perceptive post Chandresh! Congratulations !
I am not above shortcomings but a humble observation I have made(and try to implement...even though I fail often) is that you can *improve* your chances of success if you pay attention to the following.

Intentions and thoughts leads to words leads to actions.

This has been especially true in my experiences here.So the words you use are very important and people evaluate you on the basis of your words very often(consciously or unconsciously). If you believe your success is tied to effective communication then you should pay attention to the words you use.

Disclaimer: These are just my opinions and may just be worth whatyou paid for them :).

You have brought out an interesting point - we human beings are so used to our mother tongue that we fail to see similar abnormilities in our own language which we easily identify in a new/foreign language that we learn.

lets compare - chacha ko bhi uncle, mama ko bhi uncle.
Tomorrow is 'kal' and yesterday also is 'kal'

food is 'khana' and to eat is also 'khana':D

What do you say?

Good topic Chandresh. It is interesting how we bring subtleties of our mother tongue into any new language that we adopt.

This is so well evident in india , when we can almost guess the origin state/region of the person just by the tone, accent of his/her english.

One pet usage which desis find it hard to get rid of is the use of "no" at the end of their sentence.

aap samajh rahe hain na ? you understand no ?

:D

In Bengali it is even bad...

Khabar Khabey ? ( will u eat food )
Jol Khabey !! ? (will u drink water) !

MI in addition to no..you have
"She's your best friend ya,,,he's your best friend ya" :D ...No ka prayog hota hai...par yes ka bhi prayog hota hai !
Afterall...
English is a bhery phunny lang.
Bhairon become Barren and Barren becomes Bhairon
'cos their minds are very narrow :D

:D Hi Chandresh  funny topic. .. sorry... just don't have insecurities/hangups, that's all. everyone has failings. just be comfortable with whatever u do have, and others will get the message.

however, having said that, I do have one thing to say about oral structure. pls. don't refer to someone's child as "kid" when speaking with them. We had a visitor a while back who referred to my baby as "your kid" and it just annoyed the hell outta me. It's much more politer to say "your son/daughter/child", esp. if u don't know someone too well. my 2 cents worth. :)
