Hi:

I have this weird situation. I started working on a temp job and the job is completed in September. During Orientation they strictly said no one can take a day off at all and only one sick day is allowed with a doctors note. Now we had booked a vacation before the job temp started and my vacation is for 5 days end of August.
How do i go about this? am really confused as if i ask for time off due to vacation i will lose the job.

Please help.
Thanks

Employers can't as for doctors notes anymore from this year .

New changes to Ontario's Employment Standards Act came into effect at the start of the new year, which included banning employers from requiring a doctor's note for sick days.

Employees must now have at least 10 personal emergency leave days per year, without needing to provide medical authorization for them. And out of the 10 days, they must be paid for two by their employer.

It's a temp job, so don't worry about it much. They are going to can you at the end of September anyway.

If it's a well paying job & a good job, don't tell them anything - keep on working till the last day before you leave for your vacation and then quit or tell them for emergency or personal reasons you have to visit back home & taking 5 days off.

If they really need you they will take you back after your vacation, if not it's not a big deal, you just lose 1 month in September, as you will be working till end of August anyway.

The company can say whatever they want, they can't make their own rules - The Employment Standards Act and Ministry of Labour supersedes them.

What do they mean, only 1 sick day is allowed ? They probably mean only 1 paid sick day is allowed, and the rest will be unpaid.

So if you are genuinely sick for 5 days, they want you to come to work for 4 days, after the 1 sick day and spread diseases & germs & get everyone sick in the office ?

Sometimes just a viral FLU and you can be in bed for 5-6 days ! The only solution for it is complete bed rest.

When I am sick, I don't even bother to go to my doctor as it takes months just to get their appointment ! And the walk in clinics are a joke, they give you a couple of Tylenols and send you home. So that's exactly what I do just take a couple of tylenols and I stay home :) & drink chicken soup and I get better soon. So NO doctor's note for me.

But ALL the walk in clinics in my area give a doctor's note for $ 20 - $ 25 if you want. So in addition to swiping your health card & getting money from the government, they make money on the side.

Or work till the last day and call in sick for 5 days. After 5 days show up for work, if they take you back, well and good, otherwise forget it.

What have you decided?

Also do update us in August so that it will be a nice piece of information for all immigrants who are afraid and working in temp jobs.

For some reason, people increasingly began to face this problem. It is very hard to understand all the nuances of work, and what you can afford and what not. Anyway, I think that you can find out about the answer about your work here xxxx I think they can help you.
