If you want one single software that takes care of everything such as popup blocking, ads, spyware, etc. take a look at Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
It is still in Beta, but is very sophisticated and offers a high degree of control and customization options.

And you may be surprised that it is free - the only requirement is that your copy of Windows itself must be legal.
I have been very impressed with it so far.

You need Firemox/Mozilla....
You need an extension..RIP (rest in peace) and you need Adblock
Both these extensions can be obtained from
addons.mozdev.org
You also need Flashblock (to remove all the flash )
and finally you need Lavasoft
Once you have installed all these, you can remove any ad you want/(even Google Adsense !)

Another option for those on Windows XP is to install SP2.
SP2 locks-down a lot of functions like auto-install, auto-run, registry updates, etc. for non administrators.
And if you install the AntiSpyware I mentioned above in addition to SP2, you get a very powerful defense against spywares.
No need to install a gazallion freebie anti-spyware softwares (which started the problem in the first place).
