Every six months or so, my internet browser gets hijacked to a junk site or spyware and adware gets installed in my computer. Then, I end up formatting the hard drive and starting fresh. :(

Does anyone know of a good software to prevent or eliminate such stuff? Firewall and pop up protection software doesn't do the job. Thanks.

Try using Hijackthis..........but i should warn you that you should know what you are doing. (stuff like registries and all).

try installing symantec............that seems to be doing a good job on mine.

Try AVG antivirus.....google for the download from their website.....free version is very good. I have been using it on my desktop and laptop for past 2 years. Infact I use my laptop on unsecured wireless network quite often and have never faced any problem. Remember to keep auto update feature on and set scanning every morning on start-up....this will keep your system spyware free.....also you can download yahoo tool bar with Anti-spy feature.....I find their performance good too.....:)

Go to http://www.filehippo.com" rel="nofollow">LINK
and download
> Ad Aware personal 1.06 and
> Spybot search and destroy

After installing both

First Run Ad-Aware - clean up whatever the program detects
Then Run the Spybot Search and Destroy program and clean up what ever it picks up as crap.

After this I am pretty sure your System is cleaned up with all the nonsense.

Also

Download the Antispyware software from Microsoft
and install it - it is working and is very effective in stopping, preventing adwares and spywares from entering your computer.

Good luck.

A firewall will prevent unauthorised access to your computer, whereas a pop-up blocker will prevent pop-up's.

To prevent viruses and spyware you'll need an anti-virus and sypware software.

Having said that, and assuming that you have those installed and they don't seem to be working for you, it could be that either your software is not up-to-date with the latest updates and/or you are regularly visiting sites that somehow manage to bypass the installed firewall/anti-virus software.

A few days ago my browser has had a new toolbar - with all sorts of options like gambling, internet, Pharmacy, etc. It even has a remove toolbar option, but when I clicked on it directed me to a junk website.

I would very much like to remove this but I do not know how to.

I use Cogeco internet security. Would downloading of the programs mentioned earlier affect the working of Cogeco. I may check that with Cogeco.

Any info / help would be appreciated.
