ottawa,
we guys in india built a room after getting freedom but we forget to make a window in that room and now we are getting problem for suffocation and not availaibilty of proper oxygen in that room.
i guess u understand where i am talking, but to clear my point i must clear that i agree we are responsible for electing the politicians and they are surely from inbetween our neighbours and not from outside ......... but do you think a common well educated man goes to vote now days.....
NO HE DOESN'T VOTE ......you know why ?
1)he doesn't have a choice between the parties and the leaders, lets take example of bihar where laloo is king from last 14 yrs only cauz he never allow a single man to vote against him, his man are present on all voting booths and are looking forward whats going on. giving u another ex of punjab we have 2 main parties here one is badal who has eaten the very left thing of punjab and has manage to build 45000 crore property from rashes just in 5 yrs the other is amrinder who has equally done worst. so whats a choice left for these people.
lets take another ex of andhra pradesh, CHANDER BABU NAIDU he was the best CM in india and has done many things but what happen in 2004 election, he lost cauz he was not interested in waisting money and providing one english whisky and give some money to below average people.
you know guys in india elections are like big diwali for these below powerty line people, cauz they get big free offers from all around the parties. and the survey says 70% of indian people are below powerty line so i guess out of 30% educated persons only 15% goes to vote and they too cauz there realtive or some far away friend is standing in election (in india u will find majority of indian realted to some politician by realtion or long way frienship)
2)where the hell is seurity for us to vote......... in maximum polling booth there is an incidence of violence so why one consider to waste his life by going to vote instead he should have join army and fought in kargil or in other wars.
so what i want to tell is this that guys living abroad are lucky when it comes to system and there rights its easy to point out the loop holes but then why we have choosen to come abroad instead we should have been living in our mother land and serving it one way or other........its simple cauz we know we want respect (money also) atleast from govt for which we are serving.
and turning to india-pakistan relation, u guys must have heard of the india-pakistan cricket match in mumbai when shiv sena and bajrang dal activites have destroy the cricke pitch and after that there was no match between these 2 countries for long............. so this is just an ex:- do u think that these people will promote the relation between 2 countries.NO, thats why i said we should lead by example and not follow those eidiots.
i can write many more thing pointing on our system but would like to finish as it will be getting bore for the person to read.

Hey.
I know many Pakistani people and all of them are good. I believe that the Indian and Pakistani people who immigrate to Canada come from good families and are not involved in conflicts. There may be a few but the one should not generalize that all Pakistani people are into gangs. I live in mississauga and I havent heard about any conflicts among Indian and Pakistani people. I have many Pakistani friends and the mix around with Indian people very well.
And even if there are some gangs, then you should not interfere with them. If you pull a dogs tail, then the dog will surely bite you.

Bandhan, I will use your last statement as an example to explain duncan's assertion of a "closed window"...

I hope Duncan, you are from India. If you are from Pakistan, sorry but no offence meant :).

You are aware how we got independence. A house has many rooms and a room has many windows. A window is kept close if something irritates you (a.k.a as Bandhan pointed out, barking dogs). Lil' wonder the Indo-Pak border is one of the most fortified and dangerous borders in the world. Since ppl are closeted, they do not get a feel of what the other side is like.
As Hg has pointed out, Indians and Pakistanis "look alike" (and thats what they were) .. We are different peoples, having different sets of cultures, traditions, political views, but we share a common history

(.."Hum log kitne hi alag ho jaayen, hamare bachpan humse kabhi bhi alag nahin ho sakte. Aaj jab ki saare pul toot chuke hai, bas yehi ek pul reh gaya hai...";) :D (no marks for guessing which film that is from)

. This is the hallmark of healty rivalry and it should be encouraged. Unf, as many folks have rightly pointed out this rivalry becomes extreme and thats when fissures start to develop.
Heston pointed out that ppl who immigrate to Canada (from both countries) are educated. I tend to agree with that observation, which is why I myself have not had any bad experiences with any Pakistani's (except maybe during the 1999 Kargil war :( ).
However, do I have to go and welcome them in my life/friends circle as I would welcome other communities ? I dunno and probably would not. Thats 'cos, among our friends we have all kinds of discussions and that includes political discussions also. Having Pakistanis in that circle would vitiate that atmosphere rather than do any good.
I would like to point out that, I do not condone "vitriolic" behavior against any folks, even they happen to be from a (supposedly) enemy country. Thats why I said, the best policy would be to courteous to them, as pointed out by Hg. Civility is da hallmark of all Indians ( umm, thats what we were taught in school) and we should propagate that as much as possible. And above all, as Bandhan has pointed out
"stay away from the tails, cos Dogs can bite" !
Thats the policy I have been following since 1999. During this time, I have had the occassion of meeting a few Pakistani students ( juniors of cos). Did not have any problems with them, except maybe earlier this year when India defeated Pakistan, in Pakistan in the cricket series.

I can give an example. Jews and Palestenians are sworn enemies in the Middle east. However, they (generally) lead a peaceful life here, with little token or no social interaction. I feel, we can also follow the same attitude, yet be available for help or providing information to anyone who seek to come to this "KarmBhoomi" :)

Heston, please post some scenarios that are prevelant in UK ? We would like to your views on this as well.

Let me give you some example of Asians in UK (as per my understanding)

UK opened the doors for Asians in the 60s-70s and thats the time asians from India and Pakistan came here in large numbers and settled here.

As compared to Canada where there is a filteration process for iimmigration, and professional people are encouraged to move there, but iin UK it was the other way round. Asians came here to fill up labor jobs that the English didn't or couldn't fill.

The asian families have been living here for 30-40 years and now the second generation Asians are living a comparatively better life then their parents.

Now the question of gangs and racial hatred. As far as I know, I have never heard of any Indian or Pakistani gang operating in any area, never have they made any news on media.

Yes, Braford and Oldham are examples of racial hatred but that was between some Asians (Indians and Pakistanis) on one side and some English on the other.

There are problems once in a while but mostly to do with Black drug gangs.

Nowdays the media is busy in biased coverage of racial hatred against muslims and anyone who has a beard.

I have a lot of Indian friends and have also shared houses with them during my student days and I can assure you , I had a brilliant time living with them , and may be they were also able to learn a bit more about Pakistanis.

I think Canada has an integrated and well educated professional Asian immigrant population and they will teach their children that there is no difference between them and anyone else and live in harmony.

"Long Live India and Pakistan Relation" this is the slogan which I have just heard on T.V. by the student's delegation who has came 2-3 days back from Pakistan to visit the India and Indian schools.

Please look in to the daily devolpments for the improving of India-Pakistan relations. So plese don't even think about these type of Gang wars etc. Try to maintain the good relation every where in the world between Indians and Pakistanis, because we are basically from one land, our culture is same, our language is same, our outfits are same, we looks like same,

So there is no Gang war any where, If you have ever heard about these type of things, they are not the Indians and pakistanis they are only "GUNDA ELEMENT"

So please forget about all these things and seriously involve in creating a new relationship
