Hi Friends,

I am reading the board after so many days. A lots of discussions are going on all sorts of matters.

I want to know about if I decide to learn french. How much useful it will be for me??
Also, is the time, money and energy put in learning French is worth it??

The people who already know French should also give their views.

Thanks in advance.

Enjoy Happiness.

It is not an easy language to master and know really well.
The level of French that you will need to know in order to compete for jobs (such as Govt. jobs) is quite high.

CIC requires the TEF test to get points for French language - and it is a very difficult test for someone who has no previous knowledge of French.
In order to seriously compete for French jobs, you should be at or above the TEF level at the very least.

This is a good topic..It wouldn't hurt to learn French. If you have the ability and conviction to learn it..your job prospects will increase substantially. Alot of job ads require bilingual (French/English) speakers particularly in IT support. You woul also stand a better chance in the government once you get your citizenship.

Having said that..do any of you folks know a good place to learn French that is sponsored by the government within the GTA?

I learned some French in High school but never used it and forgot it all.. I think it would be a good idea to revamp that skill.

Merci Beucoup !!!

Learning French is a total waste of time unless you are going to move to Quebec city and then you will pick it up anyways.

It surprises me that many Desi's continue to buy into the liberal promise of "protecting minority rights" when the "minority" they are actually talking about is the French minority and the rights they are talking about are the language rights that guarantee Francophones jobs all over the country (high paying jobs) and guarantee Francophones their own French schools. Who cares about the fact that Punjabi is no. 3 or no. 4 in the GTA ??? What rights do they get??

Canada is simply not a bilingual country, even after 3 decades of "official bilingualism". It exists only in Ottawa and east of it, and most of that is "forced" bilingualism in a sea of English media and culture.

Canada is an English multilingual society with more than 100 languages spoken by its people. That is the reality!

Looking for a job.....market your 2nd and 3rd languages you know as a Desi.

I respect your views on bilingualism, however you can't say knowing French is a wate of time. I know of a desi girl who moved here from Montreal, she got a job in Customer service right away only because of the fact that she knew French. About 60% of all support jobs require bilingualism. Yes it would be nice if bilingualism included Punjabi or Hindi. Unfortunately that's not reality. The French have been living in Canada for 300 years hence the propensity of that language within Canada. We have only been here for a few generations. It will take time.

Dear avocet,

where do u stay in north york. when i visted toronto i stayed near york dale mall.

I want to press a point here that it is very usefull to know an additional language. I myself know punjabi and urdu in addition to hindi, but knowing french is going to help us not in getting a job but also in reading and undersatding sign boards, product manuals..

MOST Important is the french knowing persons get higher marks for immigration purposes.

also, the school going children have to learn french, it will help the family a lot if the parents know some french.

there are amny more things to write about it. which i will be eloborating in my future mails.
