I am wondering if there are any desis working in the shipping industry? If yes, could some one guide me as to the job prospects. Also are there better prospects in Vancouver or in Toronto?
I donot know anyone in Canada working in shipping industry. But the shipping industry is mainly concentrated in Helifex, Vancouver and Nova Scotia etc.
The reason for the desi not to choose shipping industry is that shipping industry pays the same money all over the world. then it is better to earn more on ship and stay in Bombay rather then in Toronto.
Also, India has much more ships then Canada. The ships coming to Canada are maily owned by USA, Europeans and Asians.

Maxim + Happy,
Thanks your replies. Unfortunately doesn't tell me much. Guess you guys really don't know much about Toronto & Canada in general and shipping in particular. Toronto is a very busy port and ship's of all nationalities come to Toronto. I have been to Toronto several times in my sailing days and I wasn't sailing on USA or European flag ships.
Also when one refers to the \"Shipping Industry\" it doesn't only cover sailing jobs. The shipping industry generally covers the whole Marine transportation scene where people are employed in -
a. Ship management
b. Port management
c. Pilotage
d. Ship / Cargo surveys
e. Ship Agency
f. Freight forwarding
g. Chartering / Brokering
h. Stevedoring
i. Logistics
I am an ex seafarer - Master Mariner, 24 years sailing experience, 12 years as Master (Captain), now working ashore in a shipping agency for the past 7 years handling operations & logistics of three major lines.
Maxim,
Thanks, went through the sites. Problem is, in North America Shipping is generally loosely used for defining any kind of dispatch and mine being a speciallist industry, there is very little coverage.
Hello SPV, I am writing this with some little knowledge I have in this industry. Yes there is a harbour in TO but very limited in terms of trade. Most of the goods come in to TO through Montreal and its sent via rail. Most of the Major Shipping lines have their presence in TO just for booking purposes. But there are lots of Frieght Forwarders. http://www.buckleys.com" rel="nofollow">LINK they spesilize in Jobs for the shipping industry. All the best.
