What's this "GOTHAM CHOPRA" guy smoking anyways?

Another waste of bytes and bandwidth from the TOI tabloid.

A lot of the essence of that piece was lost due to the brevity of the same.
Gotham Chopra is the son of the motivational speaker Deepak Chopra.

I actually agree with the piece. All my work and ambitions are also funnelled in that direction( as BL probably knows)

If you notice that Americas major exports to the world are its culture(movies, music, food etc). That is part of the reason America is a powerhouse. Similarly the premise of the article is that India with its varied and rich culture have an edge over the competition. That did not come out too well in the article.

Here is a writeup of the recent collaboration between Deepak/Gotham and Shekar Kapur. I'm almost tempted to say that they stole a few of my idea's :)....some of my first posts on CD a year ago mentioned a few similar ideas.

Deepak said, “As the narrow walls of nationalism come down, and as a new collective humanity, we break through our tribal identities, Asia will become the home of the entertainment, media and business activities of the world. Through the studio, we plan to reinvigorate some of civilization’s greatest mythologies, to tap into the primal energies of India and Asia’s great tradition of storytelling. The Super-Powers of tomorrow will not be defined by their military prowess but by their cultural contribution and we firmly believe our new venture will be at the vanguard of this global, cultural and economic shift.”

It seems TOI and HT are in some sort of competetion to outdo each other in being tabloid-y, especially their online editions.

The HINDU is the most plain to the point newspaper (both online and otherwise).

Jake,

Thanks for adding some much needed perspective. I didn't know who "Gotham" was, I figured it was some ABCD's corny way of saying "I'm a Guatam who lives in the Big Apple". :D

Anyways, yes. I vaguely remember having that argument with you way back in time. I'm still not as optimistic as you are. I happen to think that the kind of world we're heading into, people will only respect cultures that have the backing of military might. Any other respect will be temporary and phase-based.

India already has gained a very prominent place on a global stage and I see the prominence going up in the future, however the decline of the west and the rise of the east to conquer the world seems more fantasy. Does not sound probable in the forseeable future with the current variables. The gaps in infrastructure are too huge to fill and populations are too imbalanced to bring the standards of living on par, let alone India ruling the world.

Don't agree with Gotham's dad either when he says that the superpowers of tomorrow will be defined not by military might rather by their cultural prowess. Can't think of an instance in history where that has happened yet and I don't think that's going to happen in the future as well.

This is however a very dynamic equation we're talking about and I have no qualms admitting that all theories can burn to dust in a matter of no time.

I agree it is wishful thinking at this point...due to the many points you bought up.
However, when you look at Americas status as a superpower...it is not fully based on military might. Its military and institutions actually safeguard and sustain its business interests. One of its biggest exports is...the American dream...lifestyle and culture...be it clothing, films, music and even the burger :). Its films alone market every product they have...or would like to. Americas ability to market and project its culture across borders is incredible...look at the economic benefits they enjoy in doing this. They are not a super power ONLY because of their military. That status...like you say would be temporary.
If india is to be a superpower it probably need the ability to project both its culture and military prowess. With the current technology and the human resources along with centuries of cultural endowment...India is in a position to export its culture too. Bollywood is growing increasingly popular internationally. Will we be really be able to get more creative and project our culture further...into the western psyche? Make our culture 'cool' and 'in'? Time will tell. I will find out too:)
